Title: Bands you'd like to introduce to everyone
Post by: Moonstarsky on August 22, 2018, 06:55:03 PM
I came across this band the other night at a concert,  they were the opening band and I thought I'd share with you folks.

https://www.google.com/search?q=le+butcherettes&prmd=ivn&source=lnms&tbm=vid&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiPv6yl-oHdAhVKjlkKHYUJDHsQ_AUICigC&biw=768&bih=1024

They're called Le Butcherettes! The above link is a bunch of videos of theirs, with at least 1 featuring Iggy Pop.

They're not around anymore, but The Catherine Wheel.  I thought they were criminally overlooked in the '90s.  Started out with this ambient, wall-of-sound, vibe with their first album Ferment (which is one of my top 10-15 favorite albums).  Then they went for a progressively harder sound as the decade went on.  They were fronted by Rob Dickinson, who is Bruce Dickinson's cousin.  I think all their albums are solid, with the exception of their last one.  In particular Ferment and Chrome are incredible.

Here's probably their best-known song, which I would also consider one of my top 10 favorite songs of all time.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtTqR9oZX6Q

This is a local band for me.

They're called The Damn Truth, I absolutely love the remake they did of U2's Love Is Blindness, sung by a female lead singer with a salty voice.

I like this band, but love this song: https://youtu.be/IG9uFC_Zd4E it's Automatic by Mondo Cozmo.  It kinda reminds me of U2.

I have quite a few of these.

First up: Ho-Hum

This band is local to me.  They never had that big a following even for a local band, but they were always very well respected, landing high on lists of the best bands in town.  They are not my favorite band from around here, but they are the most traditional rock band I'd like to include here.  They started out as a pop rock band and moved into more experimental territory later in their career.

Here's my favorite song of their's, Don't Move to City.  It was released in 1997 on the album entitled Sanduleak, which I think is their best record.  Every song on it is good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkuEse2ez3s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkuEse2ez3s)

Here's a more experimental one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7det-w0AKHI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7det-w0AKHI)

My top 20 Ho-Hum songs:
1. Don't Move to the City
2. Pretty Ugly
3. I'm-a-Waking Up
4. Good to Get to Know
5. Things Like That are a Drag
6. Exit Strategy
7. Fake Pop Minefield
8. He Married a Girl from Mississippi
9. Too Much Elbow Room
10. Ladyboy
11. Bad Things
12. The Mother Factor
13. Ordinary People
14. 26 Hour Blues
15. You Know How Lonely Goes
16. Let's Do
17. Handheld
18. Rendezvousoo
19. The Ax
20. A Heart of Stone

If the songs I linked caught your ear and you'd like to check this band out, I'd start by listening to their album Sanduleak.

Here's their Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/0m2S5Mo14Pd35UCvD5Wzi6?si=VuUHstBiSumcQLbmbsHXCQ (https://open.spotify.com/artist/0m2S5Mo14Pd35UCvD5Wzi6?si=VuUHstBiSumcQLbmbsHXCQ)

For one , Iíve really enjoyed their recent acoustic album. I was skeptical that they could make it work but they did. I also have been running through different greatest hits albums including the New Gold Dream release. Some of my favorite tracks: Colours Flying and Catherine Wheel, Big Sleep, Theme for Great Cities (instrumental reminds me of 80s U2 instrumentals)...And they just released a new album. Enjoyed it a couple of times when I just needed something different to listen to.

Simple Minds were RED HOT for their first 5-6 albums. Then it went a bit Stadium rock/Mainstream for my liking. I stayed on board with them till around 1993, then after that, i couldnt begin to comment.

I would like to nominate the band James, for your listening pleasure. From 1990 till 2001, they were superb. They split up in 2001 but reformed in 2007. Since then, they must have done 4-5 albums, but im not hugely keen on post split material. So much so, that i didnt even bother buying the last couple of albums. BUT, many die-hard fans do seem to lap up whatever the band do.

The second band I'd like to introduce to you all: The Gourds

This band is from Texas, but it was part of a group of alt-country/americana bands that would play in my home town in Arkansas pretty regularly in the early 2000s.  I'll be making posts for a couple more of those here.  The Gourds are a unique and diverse band.  The songwriting is absolutely top notch from both of their singer/writers, and Kevin Russell has one of my favorite voices in country music.  They are the most famous of that group of bands I mentioned because of their cover of Gin and Juice by Snoop Dogg, which got them a lot of fans.

I haven't done a full deep dive into this band yet, but here are a few of my favorite songs of theirs:

Lower 48:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=988wG7siKb0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=988wG7siKb0)

El Paso: (not great audio quality)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umKy2vxkjRw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umKy2vxkjRw)

Gangsta Lean:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwbxuL0jqps (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwbxuL0jqps)

Cracklins:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7fpDYmnqVc&t=79s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7fpDYmnqVc&t=79s)

Gin and Juice:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4hGSR5njZE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4hGSR5njZE)

My top 20 Gourds songs at the moment:
1. Lower 48
2. El Paso
3. Magnolia
4. Cracklins
5. Clear Night
6. Hallelujah Shine
7. Sweet Li'l
8. Gangsta Lean
9. Blood of the Ram
10. Jesus Christ With Signs Following
11. Raining in Port Arthur
12. Burn the Honeysuckle
13. Pushed Her Down
14. Gin and Juice
15. How Will You Shine?
16. Country Love
17. Eyes of a Child
18. Pi*s & Moan Blues
19. Lament
20. Meat Off the Bone

If any of these songs caught your ear, I've made a Spotify playlist of my my favorite songs of theirs.  I'll be continually adding to it as a dive deeper into this band.  Here's a link to that: https://open.spotify.com/user/1295130884/playlist/6K5tJhXzQtlFOZM8iUoqLA?si=N_9KzPkeR9qdfD3kq7nLEQ (https://open.spotify.com/user/1295130884/playlist/6K5tJhXzQtlFOZM8iUoqLA?si=N_9KzPkeR9qdfD3kq7nLEQ)

For the past 11 or 12 years I've really loved the Scottish band Beecake. They've had very little commercial success and don't seem to be known by many, which is a shame as I think they're terrific. They've released 3 albums and some E.P.'s. Hard to compare their style to anyone but some of their earlier stuff has a very Radiohead sound to it and lead singer Billy (Boyd, also an actor) has a Thom Yorke-ish tone to his voice, very pure and rich with a gorgeous falsetto. An excellent band of musicians/songwriters who deserve to be more recognised. Sadly, with the band all being middle-aged now I can't see them hitting the big time in this ageist world, but who knows?!

This is one of my favourites of theirs, The Clown (from their second album). It's hauntingly beautiful:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKDL2nr_2Ak

Here is their new video for their song Harbour (which is from their 3rd album) I love the rhythm of this song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2v9cuNwmSQ

They haven't made many music videos. This song, Soul Swimming, is one of the first songs I heard (and bought) of theirs, from around 2006 or 2007. A different version of it was recorded for their first album but this original version from their Just Be E.P. is by far my favourite version:

Catherine Wheel was excellent.  The early 90's always invokes the shoegaze movement to me (Curve, Swervedriver, Lush, Slowdive, Ride, My Bloody Valentine etc...).  That distorted wall of sound was so freaking awesome.  Catherine Wheel, I think, fit partially into that genre.

I'm not crazy about Pitchfork but they put a pretty good list together that I had bookmarked under my Shoegaze bookmarks.  There are some really understated pieces of music in that list.  Plenty of bands to explore.

One of my favorite bands is Against Me! They are a punk rock (not pop-punk crap) band from Gainesville, Florida that have flown under the radar for the past 15 years. Founder, lead vocalist, and lead guitarist Laura Jane Grace is a transgender woman. A lot of their songs are political like U2.
My top 5 favorite Against Me! songs.
1. Thrash Unreal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzJ21OpFnZ0
2. True Trans Soul Rebel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUrfrCfvZDc
3. Transgender Dysphoria Blues https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFgFGgjNQ4E
4. I Was a Teenage Anarchist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7RUeMCZL3Q
5. Black Me Out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWB_b480-9c
I hope you all enjoy!

"New Gold Dream" by Simple Minds is a stunner.  For individual tracks, I really like "Love Song", "Today I Died Again", "East at Easter", "This Earth that You Walk Upon".  Other fans may know more about their deep cuts.  I just saw them in concert in Detroit, and Jim Kerr was super energetic and grateful for all of the fanlove!

I'm a big shoegaze fan. I like Catherine Wheel - Ferment but not to same extent as Ride, Slowdive and MBV albums. Managed to see all 3 of the latter live in recent years, plus Jesus and Mary Chain.  Give me some noise-pop/shoegaze/dream-pop any day!

I'd like to submit, for your consideration, NEEDTOBREATHE. They're a great modern rock band that, despite being Christian and having a lot of Christian themes in their songs, aren't what you'd usually expect from that type of band (i.e. not CCM, praise and worship, or youth group rally rock). I'd say their sound is a bit of Southern rock in the vein of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

I don't really have a top twenty to give you, but I'll submit an introductory ten songs that should give you a good idea of what they can really deliver:

- Restless
- The Outsiders
- Valley of Tomorrow
- Girl Named Tennessee
- Devil's Been Talkin'
- State I'm In
- The Heart
- MONEY & FAME (they capitalized their titles on the H A R D L O V E album)
- DON'T BRING THAT TROUBLE
- TESTIFY

As for a full album, I'd say The Outsiders is the most consistently great album they've put out, but Rivers in the Wasteland and H A R D L O V E are also excellent.

I like to tell every one about my daughter's friend from high school who is looking to release his 2nd album this summer.  His name is Aaron Rizzo and his 1st record was called Blck Tee Shrt (released when he was 18 or 19) and is available on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, etc.   He is a singer-songwriter and has a wide variety of influences.

Two songs from his 1st record made their way into 2 Showtime's SHAMELESS episodes and he was favorably reviewed by Canadian rock critic Alan Cross (a big U2 fan if you don't know who he is).

If we are nominating relatives - I'd like to introduce to you my nephew's band - from Leeds; Hyde Park Brass:

https://hydeparkbrass.com/

They've been on BBC Breakfast, BBC Sports Personality of The Year (briefly) and have made their first TV advert and released their first EP of original material in the last 12 months - as well as playing at festivals across the North of England (mainly).
Goes without saying Hot 8 Brass are one of their biggest influences.
