Title: 2019 subscriber gift
Post by: 64ac30 on November 20, 2018, 09:44:24 PM
This is probably the best gift since U22. A live double album of innocence and experience (2 tours) in a book. Way better than a dance vinyl remix. Also worth noting they say presale access if there’s any shows

That's more like it, last few gifts have been rubbish , I think that basically confirms a tour down under if they are giving out presales

One CD is Innocence and one is Experience. These U2ers are smart dudes.

....or this means “That’s all folks!”

How can they possibly top that tour? Absolutely superb.

It’s like “Breaking Bad”, “The Wire”, “The Sopranos” and “House of Cards”, we now have closure!

Discuss.

You forgot "Lost" and "Mad Men" (in other words, some closure but not enough).

How can they ever be done?  They are the very breath in our lungs. <cries>

I hope they release more than just songs from innocence and experience albums, but if its just live versions of every song played from both albums I'll be very happy. I do not want anymore live versions of beautiful day/one though.

Please let the Experience side be more like what the European setlists were. Acrobat, Wild Horses, Stay, Zoo Station. This is a very exciting gift.

I hope they embrace the idea that if the Experience shows had rarities and was for the dedicated fan than the gift should reflect that as well. So yeah, no Pride's, One etc.

This is the first time in ages I’ve considered a membership based on the “gift”. I’d still like to see actual track lists first, though. I don’t want just the I +E tracks done live.

Believe it or not I received by 2018 subscribers gift today. I assume it is the 2018 one rather than the 2017 one now that I think about it. At least if there are song downloads, you will be able to get the 2019 gift quickly! I really liked the U22 360 tour thing they did so the 2019 gift sounds pretty good.

It’s a great gift ! Thank you, U2!
If I had to choose, the innocence side would be
People have the power with Patti Smith
Miracle (of Joey Ramone)
Vertigo
I will follow
Iris (hold me close)
Cedarwood Road
Song for someone
Sunday Bloody Sunday
Raised by wolves
The Troubles
Until the end of the world
The Fly remix
Invisible
Lucifer hands
The crystal ballroom
Volcano
Every breaking waves

The experience side would be
Love is all we have left
The blackout
Gloria
Red flag day
Dirty day
Zoo station
Stay
Wild horses
Hold me thrill me kiss me kill me
Acrobat
The best thing
Get out of your own way
American soul

Its a disappointing rip-off not a gift....$50 (£40) for a double CD and book. I live in the UK so I wont have the need for a pre-sale having seen the past three tours and dont need another t-shirt either. Already have I+E on my ipod (easy to get/do).

Coldplay selling their latest tour to all as 2 double CD @ £12.99.

Therefore the presentation book which this 'gift' must be something special especially if its to beat U2 SHOW or U2 BY U2; it'll have to be a blooming fantastic to be worth £27.01.

Why not release directly to the general public (as per Coldplay)?

I'll just wait for the inevitable 'release' on YouTube thankyou.

I can't quote much on the former, but on the latter, I'd at least add All Because of You, Elevation, Desire, Even Better Than the Real Thing, and Staring at the Sun. I know a few of those have been on previous releases (some multiple), but I think there was a degree of uniqueness to some of those mixes on this tour and I'd very much embrace their inclusion.

I'd also nix the intermission songs. They're just studio remixes. I'd rather just have the plain studio recordings.

As an opinion of the idea overall, this is the greatest subscriber gift since the monster that was U22, and that's saying something.

sure, I love all those songs too, but like you said, it were released before... That said, I prefer the experience versions of Elevation and Even better than the real thing that the innocence versions.

Like you, I feel very lucky to have this gift, I'm a U2 fan since almost 3 decades now,
and the last 4 years, we've been given a lots of things :
- Songs of Innocence in 2014
- Innocence + Experience Tour 2015
- The Joshua Tree Tour 2017
- Songs of Experience in 2017
- Experience + Innocence Tour 2018

and I can feel 2019 will be a busy year too with:
- Innocence + Experience live double CD in 2019
- U2 cover of a T-Rex song
- World Tour in Australia, New Zealand, etc...
- The Joshua Tree tour live in Mexico Dvd
- Experience + Innocence live in Berlin Dvd
- and why not Songs of Ascent album...

There's so much to come. U2 worked with Eno and Lanois for this album, the band also worked with Rick Rubin and RedOne for two more records, which means U2 have at least 3 albums (with very different feels) under their sleeves.
U2 already have changed their way of touring lately, but I'm pretty sure that we'll have more albums in the near futur, and maybe less tours also. Time will tell...

Easy to forget how hard they worked on the innocence and experience albums. Delays, 're recordings, further delays, panicking over producers, ATYCLB pinned to the wall for inspiration.

What we got was a best of all the material they had in the bag. That was their attempt to make the best album they've ever made.

They're not sitting on their best stuff, waiting for a rainy day.

Would love to be wrong but it is a virtual certainty there wont be a new album for some time and any material previously worked on that hasn't seen the light of day wont be part of any album about to come out. There might be some material that is extensively re-worked into a future album but I don't expect a new album for probably 3 years from now when you factor in they probably want an extensive break and then they take forever once they do start recording. Best hope for some of the unused material is that it forms some sort of bonus material with the next greatest hits album they do or a subscribers release like Medium Rare & Unmastered (if I got the name right) from a few years back.

I would actually love the 2020 gift to be another compilation of rarities, remixes and demos again. It'd be cool to see what they left on the table from the I&E sessions.

If there's a tour in 2019, it'll be supporting an album.
And I doubt it'll be Joshua Tree again.

Adam Clayton expressed several time U2 had to figure out how to make stadium venue,
and mentions "Songs of Ascent" as an option.

Maybe, it will be another album (Rick Rubin sessions or RedOne sessions), but it would be more logical to release "Songs of Ascent", as it was part of the initial plan.

Here’s my concern: they haven’t released the track list, and a double album that encompasses two tours means there’s not enough room for two full sets. They’ve only mentioned songs from the two albums the tours supported. Does this mean the set will only have the new songs? What about Acrobat? And the new version of NYD is on the record store day release...not included on this set, then?

I may yet subscribe to get the set, but I’m bracing myself to be disappointed when some songs aren’t included.

Based off history I don’t think it will be shipping anytime soon. I hope I’m wrong but there has been some seriously long delays for previous gifts. I really hope it comes out soon...with Acrobat.

It was the same during the Propaganda time. My father payed 270FRF in bank fees for my membership. I still hav the proof.

Honestly those club things (for any big and famous band, not just U2) just smack of fan abuse to me.  Paying for the opportunity to maybe get better seats?  Calling the “premium” item a gift when you’re paying $50?  Never have understood how a big successful band making millions of dollars can do that to its fans.  For small struggling bands I get it.  Its an opportunity to be a patron of the arts.  Nothing wrong with that.  But bands like U2...kind of shameful in my opinion.

You realize there aren't very many companies who manage fan clubs and it may actually be in U2's contract they have to use them.  It just seems everyone seems to think U2 sits around and is involved in the day to day operations of most of this stuff. Honestly, about they only thing they get involved with are things like, "what picture do you want on the cover of this fan album? Ok great, thanks Bono".
Title: Re: 2019 subscriber gift
Post by: Tortuga on July 09, 2019, 09:39:28 PM
I think U2, being one of the most successful rock bands in history, could do the fan club any way they want to if they really cared about it.  Look at how Pearl Jam has taken control of their business in the interest of their fans.  I very much doubt U2 is as uninvolved in their business as you suggest.  They have in fact been known for being very saavy throughout their career, for example, their re-negotiation with Island in 1984.  They are not a popstar record label creation that does little more than choose photos.  This is a band that has had control of its business and created a minor industry.  Even outside the music business they have multiplied their wealth through investments such as Elevation Partners and real estate.

All I am saying is they are not involved in the mundane day-to-day details everyone is always complaining about on here.  Crappy customer service, slow shipping, etc.  Bono is not walking through the call center giving performance reviews.  The band give creative direction and move on to other things.  They aren't running these things day to day.  Could they set up their own?  Probably but it wouldn't be as cost effective and managing costs and investing wisely is how (as you pointed out) they have become wealthy on top of their music success.  And if there is one thing I have learned over the years about fans is that they are never all happy.  Someone is always all twisted up about something.  Personally, the fan club has its faults but I'm much more in favor of them outsourcing it (even if its crappier) so they can work on music, not dealing with fan club issues.

My point was why do they do it at all.  Its a money grab taking advantage of people they so “appreciate” for “giving them a great life”.

Y’all catch the full track list? It’s on the U2 website, but you need to log in as a member to see it.

If you wanted to only hear live versions of songs from the last two albums (and a couple of non-album tracks), you’ll love it. If you were hoping for something like a live version of Acrobat, well, you’re not gonna be thrilled.

I'm never mad at an officially released live U2 album, but I can't say I'm not disappointed by not seeing Acrobat, the new version of New Year's Day, 40 or Bad on here. Here's to hoping they give us a follow up like they did with 360 tour fan club release.

Lucifer's Hands is the only SoI song they performed that isn't getting on the disc? Bummer. I thought it was great in Montreal when they debuted it. Certainly better than the wobbly Crystal Ballroom.

Happy to have this but a shame there aren't more songs. The 360 Tour version of this was/is awesome and is something like 40 tracks. Hopefully there are some extra downloads, primarily Acrobat of course. But why make us wait what will be many more months to get a physical CD. Let us download it now. Not sure I have anything to play a CD on anymore. I seriously cant remember the last CD I bought or played. Use as a drinks coaster maybe.

I'm never mad at an officially released live U2 album, but I can't say I'm not disappointed by not seeing Acrobat, the new version of New Year's Day, 40 or Bad on here. Here's to hoping they give us a follow up like they did with 360 tour fan club release.

To be fair, they did release the new version of NYD on the Europa EP, so they may think that's been taken care of.

Happy to hear the track list. Pretty clear that it would include only songs from SOI and SOE. I was afraid that it would not include songs that were only played a couple of times. But where is Lucifer's Hands?  Why excluded? Hopefully it  will be offered as a bonus download.

I know they released it for RSD, but it doesn’t help those of us who don’t have a turntable. I’m all for releasing rare vinyl for collectors who want physical stuff, but I’d buy the download in a heartbeat if they offered it.

Completely agree with all of this. I even have a turntable, but would gladly buy the download since I listen more to stuff on my phone or in my car than sitting down on my couch to pile into a record that really I just want to hear one song.

This is a complete stab in the dark, but is there anyone who has subscribed to U2.com who will get these CDs but doesn't want them?  I don't want to shell out $50, but I'd be happy to pay something for them. Please pm me if this is a possibility.

They will show up on eBay and discogs.

I agree 100%, but I don’t think that’s how the band view it. I remember someone asking Bono why they didn’t release more live albums, and he responded that they think that their concert videos are their live albums. I think the band take a more holistic view to their releases. If they release a song or performance, they’ve released it in their mind. It doesn’t matter if it’s vinyl or video or downloaded or whatever. They’ve released it. I would love for them to release all their art in as many forms as possible, but I don’t think that’s how they view it.

And that’s fair. I especially understand the idea that the video releases take care of the “live” itch fans may have. I just don’t particularly like the idea of releasing audio on vinyl only. It’s their prerogative to do so, but I tend to view vinyl as more of a packaging/fetishist interest. Give the folks that experience who want it—I consider myself more a fan of the music, not the physical package that contains it. A download available on iTunes or their own website could easily satisfy those of us who want to enjoy the music without having to buy a turntable to do so. Peter Gabriel recently did that with his “Rated PG” compilation, which was also a RSD vinyl release. Just my two cents, though.
