Title: Quick Question - Zooropa Voices
Post by: Maineroadfan on August 13, 2019, 11:08:38 PM
Hey all, I've just been listening to Zooropa (and the live version from Baltimore 2009) and I was trying to make out the voices in the background of the opening of the song. I'm aware that somebody says the phrases "What Do You Want" and "What Are You Afraid Of" in English and French, but in the live version, there's a third language that doesn't appear to be on the record. It sounds vaguely Spanish/Italian, and I was wondering if anyone knows what's being said. Additionally, there's a sample of someone saying what appears to be "Ultra Detergent" in the background (of the live version, but I swear I heard it on ZOOTV as well.) Does anyone know where that sample comes from? Any background info would be much appreciated.

I'm fairly certain one of the English sounding voices is Willie Williams

Here are the questions below.

I think the democracy one may be Irish philosopher Peter Rollins
Yes on Willie Williams: conflict one.
I think the detergent is from an old Jimmy Swaggart (televangelist) sermon.
In the studio version, "Don't touch that dial" may be  Swaggart.

PS Here's an old thread I started on this, and includes audio:

What are you thinking about?
Is conflict inevitable
What difference does it make
What sort of democracy for what sort of world
Why did you have to leave
How could have I been so stupid
Why does it always take so long
Why do you put up with me
How do I know what's true
 WTF
When will I know if I am a good father
 What are you afraid of
 Was it worth it
 Where is my mind
Is history bound to repeat itself
 Do you still love me
Is there something I should know
Why is it so hard
How do we get out of this
What have I done to deserve this
 What difference does it make
Why can't we all just get along
Is anybody home
Can we make it work this time
Is love really all we need
What's going on ]
How many times do I have to tell you
Will you ever be able to trust me again
Are we still on for Friday
Are we still on for Friday

na bombona de culano
Qu’est-ce que tu veux?

 Are we there yet
Is it better to remember
 What do you want
'Don't ever put anyone out
Which one is best to use
 What do you want
 Ultra Detergent!
Who do you love Who do you love
What do you want What do you want
 Don't ever put anyone out
' What do you want What do you want What do you want Who do you love Who do you love

una bombona de culona is Spanish=a big ass bottle/cylinder

In reference to the album version, where is the "Don't Touch that Dial line"? I can't seem to hear it.

The 360 version of the voices was enhanced compared to the album version.

Fresno Dave, thanks for that! It’s good to read through the full list.

3:10 and 3:17.  But now I'm not so sure that's who/what it is.
It may be the Que veux-tu faire  line
