if 'POP' is supposedly such a great album, why would one remix it?...  remixing it would be like sugarcoating a turd...:-)

The lockdown would not get them to the right mood for reworking POP

Yah, I can't think of a reason why they would.

Personally, I'm finding it very difficult to be creative during this lockdown, I wonder if other artists are experiencing the same thing.

Some artists might find the enforced retreat at home a good time to be creative.

I would hope not. Let art be art. The remixes on the Best Of 2000's were subpar. Live with the 1997 POP mixes. Flaws and all.

Remaster or remix?

I think that ship has already sailed. If they were going to do that, it would have already happened by now. They already did recording and remix sessions during the Popmart Tour for the subsequent singles released after Discotheque (Staring At The Sun, Please, If God Will Send His Angels, & Mofo) as well as the Michael Hedges remixes for The Best of 1990-2000. And Yes, I know about the quote Bono gave to Greg Kot for his 2005 Chicago Tribune article; if Bono said the band needed another month to complete the album, the reality is the band probably would need at least another 3-6 months.

I often wonder if U2 could have made a whole album like the first 3 tracks of Pop. The first 3 tracks are such high octane like Chemical Brothers. It's like they made a conscious decision to bring it right down with IGWSHA. Which I love btw and the rest of the album, just wondering.

With all due respect, i would say zero percent.
And I assume you mean remaster, not remix.
Either way, I would bet big money against it.

And if you mean re-cord, I hope not.  That doesn't usually go well (Mercy, Mining Town).

I say Pop rocks, let it stand.  They did redo several songs for The Best of years ago.  Didn't help (:

My original idea was from a quote I think attributed to Bono where he expressed a desire to "finish that album".  So I guess that's a remaster / re write scenario but I agree zero chance of that.  But it did seem to frustrate the band how rushed the album was to the finish line in order to get ready to tour it.

Would hope they are working on a new album instead. Nearly 3 years since SOE.

Pop does sound like it needs another 6 months work. Not to improve existing songs. But to create new songs.

The best songs didn't really need any tinkering - Discoteque, DYFL, Mofo, SATS, LNOE, Gone. But another two or three songs of that quality was needed instead of fluff like IGWSIA.

Not complaining. I liked the other projects they did between 93-97. If they hadn't of booked the Pop tour, the album may have been a much longer wait.

Pop could have been hailed as a classic in a similar way 'The Bends' & 'OK Computer' were around the same time.

U2 were at their creative peak after 20 years of recording. TJT & AB showed they were not phased by expectation. Focusing solely on POP & a 1996 release would have resulted in another masterpiece.

Instead the mixed reception to the album & tour resulted in the next album being much safer.

But not complaining as liked the other projects during the 93-97 period.

they've had some success with the "re-record" formula...  I actually prefer the 2017 mix of 'Red Hill Mining Town' over the original, as with the single version of 'Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses?'...  but yeah, their batting average isn't that great with the redos…:-)

Ugh, album version of horses all the way IMO!!!

As far as Pop, Larry as well has expressed a desire to re-visit the mixes (no pun intended :P). The Hong Kong Demo's definitely had promise, but I think as an earlier post said, "Let art be art" and leave it be. I enjoy pop for it's wins and it's flaws.

But we better be careful about the POP debate though. Before we know it, the "Talk U2" forum members will return and crap on everyone's posts that don't hail it as the 8th wonder of the music industry.

the biggest improvement in the Temple Bar Mix of 'Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses?' is that Larry's drumming is much more prominent...  his great drumming is buried under the muddy sounding guitar...  losing the overprocessing of reverb and distortion was a good call, in my opinion...  the acoustic guitar with piano accompaniment while using The Edge's acid drops more sparingly makes way for a more passionate vocal from Bono...  a lot of those who are only familiar with the album version don't even notice that there's a violin in the song...  the album version sounds like a demo to my ears but, perhaps that's its charm to some...:-)

The biggest issue with POP is that they rushed it.

First time ever they announced a tour before an album was finished and ready for release.  Part of me will always wonder if after the success of Achtung and Zoo TV...they felt the pressure from a creative standpoint to top it.

Probably why they went back to basics with the classic U2 sound and a bare stage with no more experimenting until No Line On The Horizon.
