Title: It's time for U2 to release a Best Of 2000-2010
Post by: txq222 on September 24, 2020, 09:48:22 AM
It's time for U2 to release a Best Of 2000-2010.

Why?

1) It's 2020. Surely enough time has passed to take stock of the songs, especially when looking at what has been played live.

2) U2 can more easily look back at this decade, having revisited previous albums, like Achtung Baby for Glastonbury and the Experience and Innocence European tour dates, as well as The Joshua Tree for its 2017 tour.

3) Artistically speaking, the continuity and symbolism of the Best Of artwork, particularly their album covers, is a hallmark of the bandís aesthetic.

4) It's a great opportunity for U2 to control the narrative of their work during this decade.

5) The purpose of U218 Singles was to showcase their singles throughout their whole career, which it did well enough. Narrow that focus to a decade.

So hereís my track list for a Best Of 2000-2010:

The Best Of
1    VERTIGO
2    MAGNIFICENT
3    CITY OF BLINDING LIGHTS

Here are the creative assumptions and parameters I followed:

A) Precedent. BEAUTIFUL DAY and STUCK IN A MOMENT YOU CANíT GET OUT OF are on the Best Of 1990-2000 compilation. SUMMER RAIN is also on the Best of 1990-2000 B-Sides compilation. This is historical record and cannot be undone.

B) Pretend U218 Singles never happened. However, WINDOW IN THE SKIES is repurposed for this fan-made Best Of 2000-2010 compilation in the same way that the songs SWEETEST THING and ELECTRICAL STORM served for the other Best Of compilations: new content to attract listeners and buyers. Should U2 actually make a best of for this decade, one can assume they'd throw in a new tune or update a b-side from this era.

C) No covers. DONíT TAKE YOUR GUNS TO TOWN, I REMEMBER YOU, THE SAINTS ARE COMING (WITH GREEN DAY), and NEON LIGHTS are not included here because the Best Of 1990-2000 does not include covers, e.g. PAINT IT BLACK, FORTUNATE SON, or POP MUZIK. (Yes, the Best of 1980-1990 includes two covers, but follow precedent here.)

D) Special songs. THE GROUND BENEATH HER FEET, STATELESS, and WINTER (SOUNDTRACK MIX) are included here because they were either specifically written for a movie or were already written and produced songs for an album. This follows precedent set by HOLD ME, THRILL ME, KISS ME, KILL ME and THE HANDS THAT BUILT AMERICA (THE FROM ĎGANGS OF NEW YORKí) on the other Best Of compilations.

E) Best Of 2000-2010 songs selection factors: a) released as a single; b) number of times performed live since release date; c) special song; or D) musical taste*.

F) Best of 2000-2010 B-Sides songs selection factors: a) did not evolve into another song; b) is not a cover song; c) has a noteworthy remix; or d) is unreleased.

G) Radio/streaming/music video play counts were not a factor in these song selections.

*Debatable.
Example 1: KITE versus YAHWEH. Performance counts are similar. YAHWEH contends with 5 strong songs from How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. KITE benefits from BEAUTIFUL DAY and STUCK IN A MOMENT YOU CANíT GET OUT OF already being on the Best Of 1990-2000 compilation. Personal preference, I guess?
Example 2: NO LINE ON THE HORIZON versus BREATHE. Performance counts are similar. An alternate version of NO LINE ON THE HORIZON was released, which implies they were still trying to polish the song. BREATHE sounds more like a complete and finished song. Personal preferences again?

I appreciate the legwork and statistical measure you took here.  What would your best of 2010-2020 look like?

Thanks for the feedback! I didn't plan such a deep dive, but after writing and rewriting my track list, I realized how solid of a decade it was for U2. ANY band would be thrilled to have those hits and quality songs. What struck me most is I don't remember this positive sentiment in the general U2-sphere/U2-fandom at the time. The decade seemed to end on a flat note with NLOTH missing a few marks and the prolonged U2360 tour.

In contrast, a Best Of 2010-2020 actually has less content to choose from: just 2 albums with very few released b-sides. With The Joshua Tree 2017 & 2019 tours, Bono's bike injury, scrapped recording sessions, and album changes after the 2016 U.S. presidential election, I think Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience, though few in number, hold up fairly well when representing a whole decade!

As for a Best Of 2020-2020 track list, I'd go back to what's been played a lot live (bold) and released as a single (italics).

Performances from release to present day:

SOI
086 The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)
109 Every Breaking Wave
007 California (There Is No End To Love)
084 Song For Someone
116 Iris (Hold Me Close)
011 Volcano
085 Raised By Wolves
118 Cedarwood Road
000 Sleep Like A Baby Tonight
000 This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now
005 The Troubles
003 Luciferís Hands
002 The Crystal Ballroom

SOE
026 Love Is All We Have Left
060 Lights Of Home (St. Peterís String Version)
083 Youíre The Best Thing About Me
071 Get Out Of Your Own Way

030 American Soul
033 Summer Of Love
016 Red Flag Day
009 The Showman (Little More Better)
016 The Little Things That Give You Away
007 Landlady
061 The Blackout
077 Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way

061 13 (There Is A Light)
000 The Book Of Your Heart

2010-2020 Miscellaneous
016 Ordinary Love
081 Invisible

001 Ahimsa

But overall, it's still a bit early because both albums haven't benefited from subsequent tours for certain songs to become live standards. U2 will also have to go through the archives to fill out a Best Of 2010-2020 B-sides! What a great opportunity to hear SOE before the changes, like whatever track is featured at the end of Edge's Fender signature guitar video.

Mine is pretty radical, but then again, you could say U2's selections for the 1990-2000 collection was pretty radical. I don't think it made sense to include any of ATYCLB on it; that was a pure crash grab. If anything, it should only have consisted of the 90s trilogy + Passengers.

U2000 (2000-2009)
Beautiful Day
Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of (Acoustic)
Don't Take Your Guns To Town
Falling At Your Feet
Cedars Of Lebanon
Love And Peace Or Else
In A Little While
Fast Cars
Fez - Being Born
City of Blinding Lights
Breathe
The Ground Beneath Her Feet
New York
Stateless
Vertigo
Rise Above 1 - Feat. Reeve Carney
Window In The Skies
No Line On the Horizon (Original Mix)
Anarchy In The USA - Feat. Tito Larriva

Beautiful Day and Stuck in a Moment should be on a 2000-2010 list and it was an big mistake to put them on the 1990-2000 compilation. They are signature songs of the post 2000 U2 and not 90's U2. I also would not include songs from the Million Dollar Hotel soundtrack as they are pretty niche songs compared to their biggest hits from the period and are more in the style of 90's U2 (in my opinion) then post 2000 U2. My list (with 16 songs like the previous):

1. Beautiful Day
2. Stuck in a Moment
3. Elevation (Single mix)
4. Kite
5. In a Little While
6. Vertigo
7. Miracle Drug
8. SYCMIOYO
9. All Because of You
10. Love and Peace
11. City of Blinding Lights
12. No Line on the Horizon (ver. 2 - although the band would choose ver. 1 for sure)
13. Magnificent
14. Fez - Being Born
15. Breathe
16. Walk On

Combined worldwide sales figures of ATYCLB, HDTAAB and NLOTH must play a factor in a decision to release a best of from this period and i agree BD and stuck should not have been included on the preceding best of compilation..

That said I think the band will press ahead with reissues of AB and HDTAAB in the coming years, possibly Rattle & Hum as well.....

What about a best of 2010-2020, which will be the best 12-14 tracks from SOE and SOI + bsides....

In any case we can all make our own compilations if the band are not willing to,,,,

What about a b side compilation ? I've collected about 100+ tracks from all eras on the band and there are some gems there that people have or will never get to hear widely...trying to put a 12-14 best of bsides from the band inc 1 remix, 1 cover and 1 live track...we are spoiled for choice i think...

That's a radical list. I like it because the latter half song order creates a way different vibe than a regular U2 album!

I like how your list uses specific songs to break up the album groupings! Well done!

I agree that BD and SIAMYCGOO should not have been on Best Of 1990-2000. Here's my list if I were to add them:

1    VERTIGO
2    MAGNIFICENT
3    CITY OF BLINDING LIGHTS
4    BEAUTIFUL DAY
5    SOMETIMES YOU CANíT MAKE IT ON YOUR OWN
6    IíLL GO CRAZY IF I DONíT GO CRAZY TONIGHT
7    ELEVATION
8    MIRACLE DRUG
9    IN A LITTLE WHILE
10  BREATHE
11  WINDOW IN THE SKIES - NEW SONG
12  STUCK IN A MOMENT YOU CAN'T GET OUT OF
13  NEW YORK
14  GET ON YOUR BOOTS
15  ALL BECAUSE YOU
16  WALK ON
17  MOMENT OF SURRENDER

KITE would be removed and THE GROUND BENEATH HER FEET would move to the b-sides list. BD and SIAMYCGOO are such bigs songs and their addition to any list certainly changes the feel of a track list.

I agree that U2 will continue along the album reissues road, which I think are usually worth it for the remastering or bonus content. Obviously streaming services cater to artist, genre, and decade groupings for content distribution, so I can see how another Best Of album from U2 may not really make a splash with digital sales, let alone physical sales. However, I keep thinking about how other best of compilations, like Queen's greatest hits albums, bring you up to speed with an artist and encourages some deeper diving into their catalog.

4    KITE
5    SOMETIMES YOU CANíT MAKE IT ON YOUR OWN

12  THE GROUND BENEATH HER FEET
13  NEW YORK
14  GET ON YOUR BOOTS
15  ALL BECAUSE YOU
16  WALK ON
17  MOMENT OF SURRENDER

The B-Sides
1    LOVE YOU LIKE MAD
2    BIG GIRLS ARE BEST
3    ELEVATION (INFLUX REMIX)
4    STATELESS
5    FLOWER CHILD
6    FAST CARS (JACKNIFE LEE MIX)
7    MAGNIFICENT (FRED FALKE FULL CLUB MIX)
8    MERCY (LIVE FROM BRUSSELS)
9    SOON
10  GET ON YOUR BOOTS (JUSTICE REMIX)

Love the Red & Blue Beatles double albums.

U2 could do something similar - 80 - 1999 & 2000 - 2020.

Both albums being a mixture of the big singles and famous album tracks. Can't think of any B sides that could go on either.

Let me revise my list a bit, to (1) conform with the no covers rule, and (2) a recent revelation for me

Beautiful Day
Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of (Album version)
Falling At Your Feet
Cedars Of Lebanon
Love And Peace Or Else
In A Little While
Fast Cars
Fez - Being Born
City of Blinding Lights
Breathe
The Ground Beneath Her Feet
Flower Child
New York
Stateless
Vertigo
Rise Above 1 - Feat. Reeve Carney
Window In The Skies
No Line On the Horizon (Original Mix)

I know "Flower Child" is well known to a lot of fansóI had completely forgotten I had it as part of the Unreleased fan CD. But it wasn't until the re-release of ATYCLB that I revisited it. It's great! It has a loose vibe that hasn't been heard on a U2 album since, and has a perfect subtlety to it that didn't need any more tinkering. At the very least, this would have been a better album track than "Peace On Earth". In retrospect, IMHO it has aged much, much better than the song it was overwrought into: "Walk On"
