Title: Hello
Post by: Northern Star on October 04, 2008, 05:10:53 AM
I know all of us who are here at the moment aren't new to the forum, but I thought it would be nice if we could let each other know a little about ourselves, so here goes!  I live in Cumbria in the UK and have been a U2 fan since 1983 - it's hard to believe they have been part of my life for that long!

Hi. My name is malachi and I have been a real fan for only a couple of years now as I am only 15 (nearly 16 by the way) but I have grown up with u2 all my life as my dad listened to it all the time. He never stopps telling me of when he saw them in 1986 at wembley blablabla. You get the Idea.

Oh and I play the drums. Larry mullens my influence.

Hi I`m Pam and live in Leicester, UK.

I`m a hard working NHS nurse whose life is made much more bearable by listening and watching U2. I remember hearing New Years Day on the radio, but wasn`t really hooked till I heard With or Without You - it was so different and stood out massively so I was hooked. Initially I was a Bono girl but now Larry is my fav - more my personality type. I think Bono would scare me to death!

Hello,

I live in Massachusetts and I have been a fan since 1991.  I remember I got a little boom box for Christmas that year and I got The Joshua Tree on cassette to listen to on my new boom box, along with an Amy Grant cassette.  I  loved that tape.  I still have it too!  I love U2 because of their passion and the fact that their songs speak to everybody in a different way.  I also converted my sister and my mom into big fans!  They always liked U2 but were not as crazy as I was, but that has changed!  We go to concerts together and other U2 related events.

Hi there

I'm unforgettable fire and I've been a HUGE U2 fan for 8 years now! Wow!

I live in New York, and my first impression of U2 was when I was in middle school back in 2000. I saw four men playing in an airport runway while a plane was flying above thier heads. And my first impression was: WTF are they doing? :D

But then the song "Beautiful Day" came on and it hit me so profoundly: it was catchy, powerful, and just so optimistic. I instantly became hooked into U2 and over the years sought out and heard the rest of their other albums, each one a great musical adventure after the next. Then the last album I heard was, of course, All That You Can't Leave Behind. From that first song to "Grace", I felt entranced. And I related to them more in a spiritual sense and I've been a fan since.

Post by: velvetjones on October 15, 2008, 01:04:20 PM
Hey Everyone

My name is Aaron, but for reasons unknown to me my friends call me velvetjones.  I am 25 and live an hour south of Chicago, IL USA.  I think the first U2 song I heard was Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me back when I was 12 or 13.  Then when I was 14 I started seeing all the videos from POP on MTV and VH1 and fell in love.  Yes, you read that right, I became a fan of U2 because of the POP album and I still love it to this day.  Through the years Ive come to understand why many fans were not as thrilled with that release as I was, and I certainly do not think it is best effort (for the reccord, the Joshua Tree is my favorite album overall), but it does hold a special place in my heart for bringing me into the U2 fan family.

When I was 17 I got my first job working at Sears selling lawn and garden equipment.  My first paycheck came the week All That You Can't Leave Behind was released.  So the first 12 dollars from the first paycheck from my first job went to pay for the album that put U2 back on top of the world.

I got my first guitar right around the same time and just messed around with it and didnt get anywhere.  Then, in November of 2001 I saw U2 live in St. Louis (where I grew up).  At one point in the show a fan joined the band on stage to play guitar during Knockin on Heavin's Door.  I remember The Edge telling him the 4 chords of the song and remember thinking how it all seemed so simple, but magical, that strangers could just spontaneously make great music together.  In the weeks that followed I started learning to strum along with pretty much every song I liked or that I thought my family and friends would want to hear.  7 Years, 6 guitars, a few amps, and 4 delay units later Im still playing and loving it more everyday.  Music, listening to it, but most of all playing it, has gotten me through some really tough times these past few years.  But the hard times give the listening more meaning and insight, and the playing more soul and fire.  I don't know what Im always going to do for a living, but I do know that music will be my life.

Thanks U2

Hi there!!
My name is Johnny. I'm 26 and I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina...
I've been a U2 fan since 2000, an aunt gave me ATYCLB for a B-day present and I loved it... 2002 I got my hands into the 1980-1990 best of, and fell in love with the band, I knew most of the songs but I never noticed that they were all U2 songs 'till then....
A causin who is also a die-hard fan, gave me a couple of bootlegs he had... so I started buying albums like crazy; soon, let's say 2 months, I had all the albums...
the I had the luck to see them live here in Buenos Aires 02/MARCH/2006 during the VERTIGO TOUR, and sincerely that was IT for me... ever since... I've been a die hard fan...
they have managed to be beside me through very tough times and have managed to changed the way I see the world, and definitively they have changed me into a better man... so I'm very very thankfull and happy for it!!
Rock on!!!

BTW: I'm loving the new forum!!! congrats and all the best of lucks!!

Hi,
My name is Robyn, and I have been on the old forum a lot of times, but I tell you a little about me.  I love U2, and when I'm on the computer, all I usually do is look up U2 things, not all the time, but a lot.  I never have gotten to see the boys personally, and am waiting till the day I do.  I live in South Fl, and when they come here on their next tour I'm going to do everything in my power to met them.  I also like to travel, swim , read. spending time with my family, when we get back home(Milwaukee WI) to see them.  I also like spending time with my husband.  Next year Jan 6th will be our 20th anniversary.

Hi. I not a new fan...  :-[ ... I become from the other forum.  ;) I'm a portuguese girl who likes U2 since 1986/7 (at that time I was 12/13 years old). Yeah... long time ago. I started listening the band with my parents, then with my friends at school. I always had a particular feeling about their music... I don't know maybe just like a refuge.  ;) The impact of the band in me has gone through several stages. But the most striking may be the turning point of great music and the visibility and fight for true social causes. I must confess that the last album was very surprising, I'm anxious for the new one. Even so, I'm still a fan of "the Unforgatable Fire". I'm careful about what's going on with the band (new albuns, new tours....) but also with the One Campaign and RED products.
See u around  :D

Greetings from Detroit...!  U2 has been my favorite band since high school when the War album came out.  I've had the great privilege of attending 26 U2 concerts so far -- from Berlin to Honolulu -- and cannot wait for the new album and the next tour.  (Zookeeper impatiently tapping foot, waiting, waiting, waiting, wishing Bono would stop saving world long enough to finish the new music already...!!   :))

Love the new forum -- nice job!

hey guys!
I'm maria from St. Louis Mo. I'm almost 15, so I can't say I've been a fan from the beginning like a lot of you here! My mom gave me Boy when I was 11 and I've pretty much been hooked since! wow i can't even say how much i love this band. My best friend loves the beatles, and the kids at school are always poking fun at us for not liking chris brown and the jonas brothers and stuff. haha maybe someday they'll see the light. we know it's hip to be square. ;) Edge inspired me to pick up the guitar when i was 12, and now my friend (the one that likes the beatles) and I are in a band together. she also plays guitar. We cover a lot of beatles and U2 stuff, it's a blast.

it's so nice to be able to talk to you all about the greatest band on earth!
i gotta go, it's the end of the quarter and i've got loads of homework. high school gets demanding when you'd rather spend your time on a hip U2 forum. ;)

I live at the end of the yellow brick road in Sydney Australia. I'm a marine scientist and a scuba diving instructor.
Became a fan when I was about 15 ("All That You Can't..." era). Favourite U2 albums are AB, ATYCLB, Pop and JT, but I usually listen to live recordings (yay for DVD Audio Ripper).

Looking forward to getting into the new forum and congrats to the @U2 team for the hard work and wonderful results.

Cheers!

I was born in Munich, Germany..air force brat!  ;D Lived in Maine and Michigan. Found out that I have Irish and Canadian roots. I also lived in South Florida. Graduated there, 1979....wasn't that a very good year?!!!! ;) :-*  I now reside in southwest Louisiana for 25 years now. I have been married, happily now 24 years. My username, AmericanAngel comes from a drawing of an angel I drew for Bono for Data/One. Only a few people have seen it over the years. I was also a big fan of Bonoonline, which is sadly gone. :( I hope to see some of my girlfriends from there here too.

Yeah, if only they had done as many indoor Zoo TV shows as Elevation or Vertigo. Dont get me wrong - loved the way the tour evolved and grew, but those indoor shows were INTENSE! Paris Bercy 05/07/92 was the most amazing concert I have ever attended (final Elevation show in Miami came very close!)

One day surfingthrough channels I caught a snippet of the Even Better Than the Real Thing Video ( for those of you that don't know there isa quick shot of some Beatle imposters). Well, it peaked my interest enough to check out the band more closely. After the release of Zooropa, I knew I would evote the rest of my liofe to this band.
I've seen them in concert numerous times and even got the chance to meet them on a couple of occassions.
Anyways enough about myself. Glad to be back on the board after so many years away.

Greetings!
My name is Lisa, I live in Sacramento, Ca and I'm new to the Forum.  I first became a fan in 1987 after hearing With or Without You.  Seeing the video got me hooked.  The very first CD I ever bought was The Joshua Tree.  The case is a bit broken but it holds a special place in my collection.
I didn't see the band in concert until 2001 and was beyond excited when I traveled to Hawaii in 2006 to see the final Vertigo show.
I look forward to visiting the forum!

Hi everyone,

New forum set-up looks great!  Congrats to all who worked on it.  I've made lots of close friends in here so welcome to anyone new and hello to anyone that's been with the forum for awhile.  I myself haven't been on lately but hope to have more time to get in here and chat in the future.

I've been a big fan since Unforgettable Fire and specifically, Live Aid.  I'm a sucker for front men jumping off stage and dancing with girls...what can I say?  But I thought the band was amazing and I'd never really seen anything like them in my 11 year old life (giving my age away there), and my mom listened to A LOT of music.  But this was MY band.  I really only got to see them live for the first time with this last tour.  I actually got teary, I'd waited so long.  They didn't disappoint and because of them, I've met some of the best friends I've ever had in here.

So enjoy everyone and I hope to chat with all of you soon.

Greetings from Wellington, New Zealand!

I am a 38-year-old man. In 1989 I had heard of a band called U2, but didn't really know who they were. Ten months later, after having accidentally overheard 'Desire' in a record shop, which led me to buy the 'Rattle and Hum' album, which led me to see the 'Rattle and Hum' movie eleven times, which led me to buy the band's entire catalogue in one purchase, I found myself at my first U2 concerts - six of them. Two in Sydney - the plane flight to which I had saved $1500 for by polishing a department store's brass staircases - and four in New Zealand. My entire life had undergone an unexpected change in direction - I had become a fan. The rest, as they say, is history.

Love the new forum - I feel like I've been given a new toy.

Look forward to chatting with y'all.

Hi all! I figured I'd reintroduce myself since I see so many other old posters doing so :)

I'm Kathleen from Philly. I've been a fan since 1987, when my best friend's older brother lived in their parents' basement because his previous room was not big enough to hold all his musical equipment, albums, etc. And that basement was a U2 shrine like I've never seen before or since.  :o

I bought The Joshua Tree with my allowance and was hooked for life.

I'm 17 and I've been a fan for nine years.  My dad listened to U2 in college(and got to see them on tour! >:( ), so when PBS aired Under A Blood Red Sky, he taped it for me to watch...and then  I was hooked. :D My favorite albums are The Joshua Tree and All That You Can't Leave Behind. My favorite song is Beautiful Day.... and my favorite band member is Bono!! :-* lol
U2 is a major part of my life. The way I feel when I listen to their songs... I can't really explain it... but I'm sure you all know what I mean :)

Hello, I'm Allison. I've thought about posting something in this topic on the old forum, but never got around to it. I consider myself to be in a love triangle of sorts. My two favorite bands are Switchfoot and U2. It was actually Switchfoot that turned me on to U2 in an indirect way. I am 25 and live in San Diego. My parents are both obsessed with music, so you would think they would have turned me on to U2, but actually it happened the  other way around. The first time I heard them was with the release of the Vertigo video on VH1. I just remember standing in the kitchen doing something when I heard this incredible sound. When I realized it was coming from the TV, I started watching the video, and I was in love. Switchfoot was the first band I LOVED and became a diehard fan of, so when I first started listening to U2, I felt like I was cheating and felt really guilty. Now I know there are different heros for different passages in our lives. Now, I am a HUGE U2 fan! Can't wait for their next tour!

Hey fellow U2 fans!
Simon here, been a U2 fan since 1983 when I first heard Sunday Bloody Sunday and laid eyes on that iconic War cover! I lived in Liverpool, England all my life up until February this year when I moved to Seattle, USA (through marriage). Seen the boys live 40 times, and can not wait for the new album/tour. This is my first forum though, love the @U2 website and thought I'd give it a go.
Favorite tour - Zoo TV (indoor), favorite album - Achtung Baby, Boy & Pop!

Yeah, that Zoo TV Indoor Leg was pretty special. Not a lot of shows, and it was the beginning to all of the madness.

Hey Hawk, dont you love the new forum? I used to be oceanbrz, its going to be a great year...
And hey all -- looks like our new gig here has started with a boom. This forum is way better with other people finally  ;Dposting.

Hi, I'm Vicki and am 31.  I live in Massachusetts and have been a U2 fan since '87 but completely obsessed since '92.  I first saw them live on the Popmart tour and saw 10 shows during Vertigo.  I love all live music in general and go to a ton of concerts but U2 is hands down the best live band.  They are literally my "church".  I can't wait to hear the new album and am saving all of my vacation time for the next tour!  I plan on trying for 20 shows!

I've been a fan since 1991. In early 1995 I joined Wire (u2-list) and it was all downhill from there.

Over the years I've been contributing to several various sites like u2log.com, atu2.com, u2.se, u2.com (!) and u2wanderer.org. I'm still involved in a few of the above sites to this day.  Like Zahn, kristbg, SEQ, DJ Rock 2000, u2mixer and other fans I have made a few U2 remixes, some of which have made it onto "Fruitlegs".  :o

In not so surprising news I am also a collector of U2, mostly specializing in unique song versions and covers/third party remixes. I've shared some rare stuff around the interwebs in the past and I hope to be able to do so in the future.

Hello everyone! I'm Italian and I live in Prato (near Florence). I've been a U2 fan since ATYCLB; I was 13 and fell in love with rock music (and U2 of course). Since then I've developed an addiction to their music and to @u2.com ;) I've never been to a U2 concert and that's my biggest regret so far... I'm definetely not going to miss the next tour!

I guess it would be a good time for me to say hello since I just registered for the first time and posted once already.  U2 has been a part of my life since 79-80  when I graduated high school.  Yes, if you do the math I am Larry and Edge's age. Your website is the best one on U2 which is why I decided to join the forum.  It seems like there are so many great and interesting fans of all ages here (especially um-older ones!).  I live just outside New York City.  Some of you older fans may figure out by my user name that I am also a huge fan of U2's Lypton Village mates the Virgin Prunes.  Any Prunes fans here too?  I love both bands for very different reasons.  Looking forward to spending some nice time here.

Hey StrongGirl, welcome.  It's great to meet someone even older than me. (And I mean that in the nicest way possible :)  Us older ladies have a lot to add to the conversation.  We remember when Bono's mullet was HOT!  And when Edge had hair.  See you around!

Thank you all for the welcome!  I hope to be around here often.  Who else will give me the time of day when I want to talk about my favorite topic-my husband, children & friends won't!  And yes, u2yooper, I do remember that mullet and Edge's hair so well.  I think you and I could probably talk for hours about "our" guys! As for us older ladies, I'd like to mention a role model all of the younger girls should have - Ali Hewson.
She is beautiful, smart, caring and a wonderful businesswoman with her socially conscious clothing company Edun (great stuff).  She is also exactly my age.  Let's hear it for us older ladies!!  Bono, you are one lucky man.

Hello all,

I guess this is the thread to introduce ourselves so here goes: (previously posted elsewhere...)

My name is Eric, I've been a fan of U2 since the Boy album. I still remember the first time I heard "I Will Follow". It was in a bar in Montreal called "Le Picasso". Sadly, that bar closed down a few years back...
Originally from Montreal Canada, I know live in Europe since 2001.
I only saw 2 shows: Joshua Tree Tour in Montreal and Vertigo in Milan. Looking forward to the next tour !!!
I play a little bit on guitar, got three of them, 2 Strats (2008 and 1977) and an Ibanez. Hunting down an Explorer and a SG...
Of course, my guitar hero is Edge... Who else??

Pleased to meet you all !!!

Long live U2 !!!

My older sister made me sit and watch Live Aid when I was 12. She was 16 and a big David Bowie fan. She said it was the most important music event in a decade, and I have to watch it, like it or not, "It's educational". I guess it was, although this wasn't my "turning into U2 fan" moment. I came around again 2 years later when I saw the Red Rocks concert video at the time of TJT.
I presently live in Kiev, Ukraine, I've been here for the past 2 years.

Do we get an "Old Foggie" badge?  :P

I just got an error message, just in case this post shows up twice, I'm not loosing all my marbles yet.

Hey Starfish.  You, StrongGirl and I can be the charter members of the Old Lady Club.  We need a catchier title.  Any ideas?  We are old enough to remember not only Bono's mullet and can verify that Edge's hair not a myth, but we actually watched Live Aid!  You must be a few years younger than me.  I think I was 16.  What an awesome day.  Did you watch it, too, StrongGirl?  Any other ladies 'of a certain age' want to join the club?   Should we start our own thread?

I have meant to say hello here for a while, but hadn't yet.  I was on the old forum but visited and posted infrequently.

I'm from Virginia and have followed the band since my high school years in the LA area.  I bought UF first and loved Pride, but became fully hooked on JT (my first CD ever).  I am now over twice that age and still love their music.  I am married with 3 kids and I teach college, so the tag line below the avatar (Edge-ucate my mind) is a reference to that as well.

Hello all,
It has been really interesting to read all of the intro's and the new forum is great.
I was an occasional poster on the old forum and like to look around at what other U2ers say when life slows down enough for it.
Been a fan since the early days - 1981/2. I remember when I heard "I Will Follow" and "Bad" for the first time. Both defining moments in my U2 filled life. I love the passion that U2's music is filled with and I love Bono's voice and have from the very beginning. I can still hear the throatyness whispers of anything off of UF or JT and its all okay. And who doesn't laugh at Bono sometimes?  He cracks me up when he talks and some of the things he says...too funny!
U2's music is my life's soundtrack.  There have been days when I know that whatever song I needed to hear at that moment would help me get through the day-and it did. There have also been times when the shear joy of a U2 song has just made it that much better.
I have to add that I always thought Bono's mullet was totally HOT, and I still do.  Do you think he can grow it back at this point in life??
Can we name the Old Timers club something else?  It makes me feel so so so old.  How about Crazy Mullets? Put me down to join.
Peace-Tracey

Hi all!

Bloom here - new to the forum, but looking forward to getting involved. I'm from Canada, currently living in Nova Scotia. I was aware of U2 throughout my teens, but really got into them in 2001 when I moved to Ireland for a year. ATYCLB had just come out, and I liked that and began to buy the other albums. Then I came across a book called "Into the Heart" by Niall Stokes in the bookstore where I worked, and read it cover to cover. After that I started checking out U2 concert videos, and noticed that every single one blew my mind. Eventually I realized that I was obsessed with all things U2, and this has never really stopped being the case. I have to confess here that I tried and failed to get tickets to the Slane concert, and just kind of gave up on it without a fight - this will be one of my lifelong regrets! But at least they put it on DVD.
