Title: Double Album?
Post by: MEMORY_MAN on December 11, 2008, 01:49:17 PM
I have heard a number of rumors on this forum that U2s album may be a double album.  That would be so awesome if it were true.  Does anyone know any more info on this or are we all still in the dark? ???

as far as i've heard it is just a rumor, and with all the crazy rumors flying around about this album, who knows what's true and what's false?

I sure hope that by some miracle this one's true though! how amazing would a double album be??!!!!

I've heard rumours that one half will be a CD only release and the other a digital only.  8)

Where did you hear that? Edge said that it's sort of two parts, one polished and refined, the other raw, I hope it all comes together.
BTW Vlad what time is it where you are?

I don't remember where I saw it, but it just got stuck in my head.

And for me the time sits at 9am.

They have enough songs for a double album , but will they actually put one out or wait a bit and release another album shortly after, who knows ! From a money making point of view , anything is possible . Time will tell !

Putting out the other half of the album around or after the tour would be sweet, I'd go for that!

I would doubt it.  Plus I would prefer a normal length album with all gems than a double album anyday.

No band is good enough to release a double full of gems. The Beatles 'White Album' had ten songs too many. Mind you that was 30 songs.

All the 'Rick Rubin' work was shelved. They have'nt been working with Eno and Lanois long enough to release a double. The best I'm hopeing for is 14-16 songs over 70 minutes. Out of these, 10 of them will be gems.

I am hoping for a good solid album with 11-12 songs that they use, 9-10 of which will be gems and 1-2 which will be coal (otherwise what will we discuss in the forum?).  I am also hoping that there are enough "leftovers" to put out an EP about 8 months later (NOT a 1/2-a$$ed studio followup), with 3-4 additional songs, 1-3 remixes and 3-4 live cuts (like they did with U2 7, just with some live stuff).
Title: Re: Double Album?

They've written about 50-60 songs so after a 12-song album (i'd like a 14 song album) a year later they could release another one from left over and brand new material.  :)
Title: Re: Double Album?
Post by: EdgeUK8_my_mind on December 14, 2008, 09:13:18 PM
Possibly, but only if it is good stuff.

If past albums are any indications, many of those evolve into other ones (Always -> Beautiful Day, etc.).  I think they pulled out 50-60 rocks and are sorting through them for the gems.  Currently, they are carving the gems to find the best possible diamonds (at least I hope so).  I don't think there are 2 albums worth of gems (I'd love to be proven wrong), but I can optimistically hope for an amazing album and an EP of decent "also-rans" with some remixes and some live cuts.  It would be great to get 2 good albums out of this, but I think they tend to be pretty selective in what makes the cut.

I've never got into EP's. I bought 'Coldplay's' latest and it's just inferior versions of songs from 'Viva La Vida' or songs that were'nt good enough for it.

It's a nice dream having U2 release an album in early 09 and then another one in 12 months. But that will never happen. They only did that once in 93. U2 take so long making albums, the leftover songs from these Eno/Lanois sessions will probably be binned and they'll start all over again. They won't go back to the Rubin sessions as they have already said they did'nt think the end product was good enough. That's why I'm hopeing the new album will be 70 minutes worth of good material.
Title: Re: Double Album?
Post by: u2search on December 17, 2008, 12:39:58 PM
I totally disagree. U2 never 'bin' songs, they always come back to good parts and rework them. So many songs are built on leftover riffs or drum sounds or whatever from previous sessions.

And the Rubin songs have been 'shelved', not discarded, for eventual later use. Edge said they will probably see the light of day some day.

Whether they go back to old songs or not, it will no doubt be 3, 4 or 5 years before we get a follow up. But I hope I'm wrong.

I hope we don't have to wait 3, 4, or 5 years for another album...

If U2 really did hit a song writing vein, then they "should" be able to release another album soon enough..or at least, I hope they would... :-\

I think if U2 is reinventing Rock N' Roll, like they say they are, then they shouldn't leave us hanging that long. If they are pioneering a new frontier, then they shouldn't stop until they reach the top of the mountain

The problem is they will annonce an 18 month world tour next year. That will no doubt get extended to two years when they add on extra dates. Then they will take some time off before even thinking about recording a new album. The actual recording will take 1-2 two years.

They could do another 'Rattle & Hum' double type album while touring. Then they would only have to record about 10 new songs. Or they could record a shorter single 'Zooropa' type album while touring. However Paul Mcguinness said in 2003 that all future U2 albums will be 'big statement' albums as they are now too big to release anything else. This sort of rules out a quickie, lesser follow up. It must be physically and mentally demanding touring and recording at the same time. Their a lot older than in 1988 and 1993 & have wives and kids to think about. However if there is a vast amount of leftover material from the last couple of years, who knows. Surprise us !

Let's wait and see how many songs are on 'No line'. If there are 15 - 20 quality songs I won't be complaing about another long wait. There are plenty of other good groups to listen to.

I think a more obvious option is to release yet another compilation album with some new songs (I hope not).  U2 can and usually do whatever they feel like, including breaking their own rules, such as (paraphrasing Paul McGuinness) "going forward, U2 will not plan tours to support albums - whichever album is out at the time, that's what we'll play".  That was kinda true for Love Town and Zooropa, but then they reverted to the normal album/tour paradigm with Pop.

The other problem with releasing a quickie follow up is Bono's other activities. The other band members have said they often have to wait for him. It seems like Bono & Edge will be spending next year on the new 'Spiderman' musical. This sort of rules out a quickie follow up. I'm not getting excited about new songs on 'B' sides being released. My experience is the 'B' sides are 'B' sides because they were'nt good enough for the album.

Seems like we were all being a bit optimistic hopeing for a double. Eleven songs is only one more than Z and less than Pop & AB. I hope the quotes that are coming out about it being their 'best ever' are true.

If they released "best of 1980-1990" and "best of 1990-2000", then it's obvious they will release another best of - "2000-2010" ;] Of course, in this decade they do not have that many songs as in 80s or 90s, but...

With Bono and Edge working on Spiderman. A massive world tour , promotional duties of the new album, families & Bono's campaigns I can't see how they could fit in another album in the next couple of years.

However maybe they have already made another album. It's made, mixed and on disc, ready to be released when the time is right. No doubt in a year's time to add juice to their tour. They did say they had 50 songs at one point. Or perhaps the Rubin stuff just needs to be mixed and released. Mixing is something the band don't need to get involved  with too much.

Releasing a best of 2000-2010 will be strange considering they may have only released two albums in this period. But at least they could put a couple of new songs on this.

In my experience, the number of songs written prior to an album can be deceptive.  Jon Foreman, the principle songwriter in the band Switchfoot (which is heavily influenced by U2 coincidentally) always has 50-100 songs written, but of those only about 20 or so get recorded and only about 12 end up on the album.  With U2, things could much be the same way...you can write a lot of songs, but in the end you've got to boil it down to the quality ones, with the second tier becoming the b-sides and the third tier not even getting recorded.

Still, a mid-tour Zooropa-esqe album would be awesome.

I'll bet they throw in Elevation and Walk On, as they were both 2001 releases.  (Beautiful Day and Stuck in a Moment were on 90-00.)  Add in Dismantle and Horizon, two new singles, and that will be plenty for them to justify a Best of 2000-2010.  I just wish they would wait longer to do it - say after 2015.  Let the songs settle a little, you know?

Personally, in the short term, I'd love to seem them release Horizon as a regular album, tour, then take some time to go back to some of their other songs in the works and release a followup album - they wouldn't even have to to tour for it - or it could be integrated with a subsequent leg - the Zooropa model.

On the supposed 2000-2010 album I think they should throw in some tracks not released as a single but on an album, i'd say Kite, Miracle Drug etc.

Making a great double is one of the few things U2 have'nt achieved. The Beatles made 'The White Album' and the Stones made 'Excile'. Thought U2 may have wanted their own great double on file.

My personal hope is that they discontinue 90-00 and release a 90-97 compilation that focuses on just their 90's material (i.e. no ATYCLB tracks, no "Electrical Storm", no "Hands that Built America") and rectifies all the problems of the old compilation (i.e. no lame remixes, WGRYWH, "The Fly", "Lemon", and "Last Night on Earth" are included.)  This would in turn free them up to release a Best of 2000-2010 compilation with:

Beautiful Day
Stuck in a Moment
Elevation
Walk On
Electrical Storm
Hands that Built America
Vertigo
Sometimes You Can't Make It
All Because of You
City of Blinding Lights
Original of the Species
NLOTH songs
New songs

That's a pretty good compilation right there.  They could even roll it back a year and throw in the remake of "The Sweetest Thing".  The MJB version of "One" is another possibility.

In 15 years time I'd like to see a Beatles style red and blue album. Maybe 1980-2000 & 2000- 2020. Assuming they keep going until then. That would be a good introduction to U2 for young people. The Beatles blue album was the first album I heard, I still remember how magical it was.

I think they'll release a Best Of 2000-2010, with all the singles from ATYCLB, even though they're already in the 1990-2000 CD. They really shouldn't have been in the 1990-2000 album, because they didn't really fit alongside the other songs. Doesn't matter too much to me, I won't be buying it since I have all the songs already.

In a way, Achtung Baby and Zooropa can be considered as a double album since ZooTV supported the 2 albums.

I think they should release a best of 2000-2010 but exclude the ATYCLB songs and use only the songs from Atomic Bomb, No Line On The Horizon and a 3rd studio album to be released in late 2010. And of course, "Window In The Skies" should be on there as well as a brand new track or two.
