Title: Kinda cool and sad at the same time
Post by: Thehorsefly [whinny!] on December 21, 2008, 12:41:09 AM
Well... at school on Friday I had to write a paper. We had to use some thinking skills we had gone over in the class, such as comparing and contrasting. So, I was in the school library, trying to think of two things to compare and contrast when I thought about comparisons that have been made between "Boy" and HTDAAB.
That was actually kind of fun to write about... all the similarities and differences, differences within the basic similarities between them... Oops! Sorry! This is going to be a long starting message!

Anyway, later that day I got to play hang man with some class mates since we had a substitute teacher and half the people weren't present. For a song, (already knowing that most of my peers at school know little if anything at all about U2) I put up the blanks for the whopping 8 word title "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" . Took them a while, since even though they knew that it was a U2 song, they really didn't know of any of their songs! That's sad, but it sure is something that distinguishes me from them! They don't know what they're missing! Or at least I think so.

 tragic comedy

It is kind of sad that most people don't know anything about U2 other than the lead front man wears funny glasses.

I have plenty of people that I know at school ask me "Who's Bono?" or maybe after seeing a picture of him on a book cover "Who's he?"
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????????? Plenty ask me "What's U2?" and explanation follows...
had to do that a few times.

U2 are the biggest band in the world, yet there are so many oblivious people out there. It is a bit sad.

Then there are those idiots who keep on saying that Bono is a moron blah blah.

And yeah, good point, those people need to extend their musical knowledge past Fallout Boy and the Pussycat Dolls.  ;)

Bear in mind that the band are in their late 40's - it's hard to keep in the mainstream media at that age ahead of younger bands - although they still do a pretty good job of it. Also it's over 4 years since bomb, so lots of teenagers wouldn't have been into their rock music at that time. I'm pretty sure in a few months nearly all kids will know who U2 are. I don't mind the situation too much - I prefer it when less "pop" fans like the bands I like, leaves more room for a proper discussion with real fans.

Anyway we shouldn't worry; at least U2 isn't making a fool of themselves in public - they are in the news for good reasons nearly all the time. It just shows the teenagers has bad tastes in celebrities and music - why the hell would I care if Britney is having another break-down or Madonna is having a divorce--OH NO END OF THE WORLD!  :o :o

In a way, being a U2 fan gives you a sort of enlightenment - it helped me to become innovative in my work and see things differently. Thats something The PussyCat Dolls can never do (and thousands of other meaningless artists -___- )

For the record, I am a teenager so I can see both sides of the spectrum - again something U2 has taught me  ;D

Likewise Nielsen, almost all teenagers play all the crappy mainstream garbage, not very many teenagers have intelligent choices in music.

After Tom Petty played the Super Bowl, my daughter came home from school the next day and most of her classmates asked "who was that old guy?".  Unfortunately, U2 fits in the same category for most middle schoolers and high schoolers, since the last time U2 released an album, all of the high schoolers were in middle school or elementary school.  I hope they are able to stake a claim for relevancy with the youth on "Horizon"

Yeah I'm 27 and my wife (26) works with some women in their late 30s. They love U2 and can't believe someone as young(young?) as me would listen to U2. Wish they knew I have been listening since I was in 7th grade.

It seems weird people liking bands that have all the infighting and controversy. I didn't realize how common bands screwing over the fans, each other and themselves was, because I listened to U2. Now I know not to take them for granted!

Actually, U2 appreciation all depends on your group.

I recently got invited to an apartment party hosted by a female friend in one of my classes. I showed up while my friends and some of her acquiantances were making dinner and such. I meandered over to the sofa and tried to look as dignified as possible in an unfamiliar situation. My friend then told me to put some music on. Being the U2 proselyte that I am, I popped out a portable copy of Achtung Baby from my bag that I keep with me for such occasions. The evening wore on and more people arrived. However, I remember noticing that most people at the apartment knew the songs, especially Mysterious Ways. I saw a guy move his hips in a Jim Morrisonesque type of way when the intro to the Fly was played. Hands down, the highlight of the night was when this hipster chick who looked like the spitting image of Mia Wallace gazed at me through smoke-rings, mouthing what I'm pretty dang sure was the line And the hunter will sin for your ivory skin.... If that isn't feminine chic, I'm not sure what is.

So Nielsen, I think the sophistication, age, and savviness of a group of gathered individuals determines their appreciation for true art.
Additionally, a lot of my fellow classmates in the Honors section at my university really dig the Hype.

This isn't a constant but rather an observation: the more unique and different your acquaintances are in regards to the average individual, the more likely they are to have some type of spiritual/lyrical/emotional journey that resonates with the music of U2.

Boys play rock and roll,

Well the gap between albums never helps. When HTDAAB was released I had just started secondary school that september aged 12. I kinda new their music because of my parents. Well I turned 16 in november, and still no new album. I will probably be 17 by the time I see them live. The gap between album doesn't help.

Why's there so much resentment for teenagers here, I guess there's a few parents on these forums  :D. Nobody HAS to like U2, don't be so snobbish about all other types of mainstream music. Some I think is crap, but I don't talk down people who like it. Plus there is plenty of other good music out there, you just have to be bothered to look for it rather than listening to mainstream radio.

I just hate the music these days. When someone at school asks me about music, it goes like this:

Person: Do you like rap?
Me: No, rock.
P: What?!?! How do you not like rap+hiphop?!?! Oh well, whose your favorite band? Falloutboy?
M: No, U2
P: What??
M:Youuuuuu-Toooooo
P: Never heard of them. You should listen to Kid Rock. He has the best voice.

I work with a lot of people in there 30's and 40's and they get a puzzled look when I start talking about U2 or mention Bono. So its not just teenagers. Worst of all I work with a lady that didn't know who I was talking about when I said I was going to see Ringo a few years back.

I've met people that have never even heard of U2 or The Beatles. I can understand not knowing the songs maybe but to never of heard of them  :-\

The biggest irony of it all is most the bands people like nowadays are just ripping off U2 or The Beatles (*cough*cough* Coldplay)

agreed. 100%.

I deal with all the same issues at my college. some of my peers make fun of me for liking "oldies" but I just accept the fact that they have a crappy taste in music.

but I have managed to convert many of my fellow teens. A lot of my friends are shocked when I play them a U2 song or a U2 concert video. My two best friends are now just as crazy about the boys as I am!!!

Some of my peers are like "You need to get into some popular music."
I'm thinking: Yeah... sure... whatever... No... you need to get into some BETTER music!
If you look you can find some recent music that is good. It's not all bad, sure it's not, But what gets me is how some people I know just don't want to look back. Just because a song is old, even a couple decades old or more, doesn't make it a bad song! That stuff influences current artists.
Like it gets me when someone says that they hate The Beatles. :o
I mean, at least show some respect for a group that was SO influential.

Anyway... I sure hope that NLOTH gets their positive attention. Oh boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe its because U2s music is a bit too creative and amazing for them, their normally used to dull and mainstream stuff.

I personally think that all U2 fans are kinda creative and full of ideas and all.

Some have heard them and don't know of them, like me before I became a huge U2 fan.

I was made fun of back in the 80's for liking them, many people told me they didn't like them because the lead singer didn't sing, he screamed in his songs (I assume they were referring to Pride).

I discovered U2 through college radio at the time, I also remember in my home town we had a new radio station that played "alternative" music and the list was pretty extensive.

It is different today, other than if you can afford satellite radio you are stuck with top 40 station after top 40 station.

And there is sooooooo much more great music out there that has never had radio play.

I am an old school music listener, well, I guess I'm old!!!!  But to read your comments on how other people don't get U2, etc, well, it gives me great hope for the young people of the world. I am the last of the babyboomers and hate to even admit it-but they did start to change the world thru music, it just is taking a wicked long time!

I really don't see how Fall Out Boy, Panic At The Disco, or any of the other supposed "emo" bands are in any way emotional. Dashboard Confessional, yes. All the other crappy pop-rock bands, no.

And you know what's really sad? People who think goth and emo are the same. (Or worse, people who call any screamo crap "goth metal.")

I'd like to weigh in again.

For all my fellow zootopians, I have to applaud your great taste in music. The music of U2 is, beyond a doubt, timeless and classic. It's a musical journey that I hope will not end any time in the near future.

That being said, I think some of the negative criticism on this thread about modern music needs to be taken with a grain of salt. There is the matter of subjectivity. But beyond that, perhaps it would help to think of music in the following terms. While it may be easy to writeoff the likes of Fall Out Boy or even Creed (Jehovah, do they suck!), remember that most modern music is corporate controlled. The problem with music nowadays is not so much owing to the presence/lack of star talent. Rather, it has to do with the approach applied.

Music has become entirely too formulaic. Those in charge of the music industries have shifted towards repeated methods over and over instead of searching innovative talent or pushing the envelope on original musical composition. Boy bands, screamo trios, gangsta rap, and overnight one-hit pop wonders all testify to the overapplication of formula over substance. Boy bands look cute and sell trite records by using gender appeal. Screamo utilizes some unholy cocktail of suburban rage and nihilism that appeals to the kid that feels neglected by the mainstream; thus, there's never any room in this genre for creativity and the whole shebang sounds the same: confused, constipated, and loud in an entirely anti-punk way. I don't even need to go into gangsta rap beyond mentioning the idea of self-entitlement based around material possession. And as for the likes of Kate Perry and such, the goal of these musicians isn't longevity - it's one hit bubblegum tunes intended for single-serving consumption and nothing more.

The problems with music is entirely the approach. Where U2 differs is in terms of their experimentation and commitment to excellent composition. That's not to say that everything in their canon has been par excellence. It hasn't. However, regardless of shortcomings or blunders that U2 might have made in regards to their music, I'd find someone hardpressed to accuse the band of failure due to their approach.

All things considered, I feel blessed to have discovered this band.
Good day.

And watch more TV.

I will sing sing a new song,
macphisto

Plus, who are Creed?
Title: Re: Kinda cool and sad at the same time
Post by: P-FLO on January 05, 2009, 06:34:22 PM
Who are Creed? Look up the songs "With Arms Wide Open," "One Last Breath," "My Sacrifice," and "Higher." (The only Creed songs anyone cares about.) They should sound pretty familiar if you've listened to the radio over the past ten years.

Linkin Park's singer Chester Bennington actually has quite a strong voice, capable of delivering some good emotion. A pity most of that emotion is unfiltered, unapologetic angst. Their song "Leave Out All The Rest" could have been an incredible pop ballad - but in the hands of a nu-metal band trying to emote, it just sounds generic.

Oh, and the worst bands in the world are Limp Bizkit, Twiztid, ICP, and anything else labelled "horrorcore" or whose fans refer to themselves as "juggalos."

Oh yeah, im pretty sure i've heard "With Arms Wide Open" Is that the one with the singer who has a deep and growling sort of voice?

Yes, it would be. I read that once, he was so drunk at a concert, the fans in attendence sued them to get a refund for their tickets.

Scouting for Girls are another lame band, almost pathetically so. But hey, they're the ones making all the money and fame so I doubt they'll care,

[sigh]...
There is this guy in one of my classes who likes to say negative things about U2 when I'm around because it's obvious that I'm a fan. It's so annoying! But he certainly won't change my mind about them!
Oy... ::)

There's a guy in my class who called U2 queer when I say that I don't like some song some other guy is playing, I ask "How are they queer?" and he just shrugs.
