Title: Q Mag. Mini-Site is (kinda) online
Post by: m2 on December 21, 2008, 09:35:44 PM
Just posted this on the home page. Lots of new song titles and other info. Bono wearing eyeliner. More comparisons to Achtung Baby and praise for the greatness of No Line On The Horizon. What stands out the most to you? :)

Here's the text of what's posted on the home page:

---------
Although the Q magazine "U2 mini site" isn't due to go online until December 31 (see news bit below), our friends at U2tour.de have tipped us to what looks like an in-progress version of the mini-site here:

http://promo.q4music.com/q4music/u2/

The Photo Gallery link doesn't work, but you can watch the video taken during a November photo shoot (watch Bono relive PopMart with his Bowler Hat and umbrella!), and read Q's "Inside the New Album" article, which is filled with new album details. In case Q magazine takes this URL down until the mini-site is finished, here's a quick recap of that article:

In mid-November, Q "initially heard seven tracks at various stages of completion," which suggests the song titles might have changed between then and now. Their overall assessment? "No Line On The Horizon is more in keeping with the spirit of 1991's Achtung Baby: which is to say, a bolder, more testing collection."

Here are the song titles listed in the Q album preview:

    * "Magnificent" ("classic U2isms" ... "atmospheric sweep")
    * "Crazy Tonight" (will.i.am worked on this one)
    * "Stand Up" ("swaggering" ... "coruscated Edge guitar work")
    * "Get Your Boots On" ("a heaving electro-rocker")
    * "Winter" ("about a soldier in an unspecified war zone")
    * "Unknown Caller" ("stately")
    * "Moment of Surrender" ("a strident seven-minute epic recorded in a single take")
    * "Breathe" (Eno loves this song)
    * "No Line On The Horizon" (there were two versions being considered at the time)
    * "Every Breaking Wave" (Bono: "We might be on to something special there.")

Eno told Q he thinks it might be U2's best album, and Edge agreed.

OK so its official the single is called "Get Your Boots On" and NOT "Get On Your Boots".  This is going to be a long three months......

Haha, Bono in eyeliner. Although, it's not as bad as I thought it'd be...it's sort of Macphisto-esque, wouldn't you say? I'm sure when people first saw Bono with bright red lipstick in a gold sparkly suit they thought he was mad, but it turned out to be genius. We shall see if that's the "new look" for this era of U2.

I miss him! maybe he is back?

If you watch the video, Adam kinda downplays the eyeliner thing. I don't get the impression this is any kind of statement. :)

The videos pretty cool, near the end I heard music being played so i'm guessing that could be a song off the new album. That article on the tracks revealed quite a lot of info too, which is exciting.  :)

This is just adding to the excitement now. Those are some great song titles there. And anything that resembles Achtung Baby HAS to be worth the wait. I have a feeling this is going to be a magnificent piece of work.
March can not come quick enough.............

And in a matter of weeks or even days we could hear the announcement of the release date of the single, I can smell it more than ever.

After two relatively "safe" albums No Line on the Horizon sounds like just what I was hoping for.  It all has the vibe of pre Achtung Baby release and that bodes well for the album

ok, this is exciting news and all, but believe it or not i am a bit disappointed. are we going from the rumour of getting a double album down to only ten songs? i genuinely respect the creative process of the band and never have high expectations, i always take what they give me. but after hearing about the 50 or 60 songs they wrote i expect more than 12 songs on this. more like a hip hop album with 17, 18, 19 tunes. hope Will.I.Am talked them into putting more songs

Thank you so much for this sneak preview. Love the site. Love the video. Love all the white lights. Song titles seem a bit predictable to me. I wish they wouldn't say every album is their best work ever, because usually it isn't.

Here are a few quick thoughts on the Q article/interview

Bono meets Green Day Eyeliner Brand

Song Titles: Moment of Surrender...Breathe (Cheap Trick, Pink Floyd)

Descriptions: A hodge-podge of what are the best U2 descriptors....epic, euphoric coda, atmospheric, grand swell, layered, etc.... BUT some other interesting terms as well....funky, electro, swaggering, evocative. Sounds too good to be true!

Trilogies:  Boy, October, War; Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, Rattle & Hum; Achtung Baby, Zooropa, Pop; All That You Can't Leave Behind, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb; No Line on the Horizon.  The new title fits in terms of longer album titles but it's description thus far seem to indicate a break from the last 2 releases....much like JT & Achtung Baby.  I guess the trilogy thing is an artificial reflection anyway.

The "hit man" does look to be in fighting shape ! Thanks for the fantastic link !!! I think the eyeliner , bowler , and brolly where an omage to "a clockwork  orange" just a guess , I can't see it being a change for the b-man.  Anytime Eno is excited along with Lanois you can bet this is going to be a BIG record !  Wouldn't a single dropped in our laps in 9 days be a nice belated christmas gift..............?

Oooh!  I can't believe I'm getting excited about this.  All this talk so far about the new album hasn't gotten me really worked up, but the Q mag. bit has got me pumped now!  The descriptions of the songs are tantalizing.  Swaggering?  That sounds hot.  Seeing new video of the guys is pretty cool.  They look fabulous.  I knew you'd enjoy Larry in the hoodie, Starfish.  The Curious Case of Larry Mullen.  Adam and the Edge look great, as always.  I'm giving Bono a pass on the eyeliner, not because I love it, but because, as Soloyan said, at least he doesn't have the shades on.  And if it indicates a new, edgier style, then may be the music will be new and edgy too.  Oh my, I'm really rambling here.  Did everyone else get to see the picture gallery?  I couldn't access it on my computer.

Really exciting stuff, this totally made my (otherwise crappy) day. March 3 can't come soon enough! (Or the single.) I'll have to check out this mini-site in more detail later ...

I'm generally excited by the song titles. The descriptions of the songs really don't sound anything like "normal" U2; are they revisiting their inner disco dancers? Intrigued by "Unknown Caller" (THERE's the Fez song!) and "Every Breaking Wave." "Winter" sounds interesting, as does "Magnificent" (hope the song is).

This is great. BRING IT.

Thanks Matt just seen the link ! ;D The U2 band wagon is on the roll again ! can't wait to hear the tracks now . seems to reference The Unforgettable Fire in the review which is great it's my fav album to date .
As for Bono in eyeliner anybody else think he looks like Gavin Fridays twin ? Ive sported most of Bono's looks over the years but not sure how the eyeliner will go down with my mates  :D

WOOT!  *totally excited*  The single and the album... can't wait!
So yeah, BRING IT!
I did notice no Cedars of Lebannon but no matter.... The teasers are killing me!

The boy's look in fine form but as for the smudgy eyeliner/ eyeshadow...  ::)
I'm all for the glasses off but if Bono's gonna do it, he need's Bellydancer's touch!
Plus, Ali, Jordan & Eve are gonna be pi**ed he's stolen theirs & made a mess! lol   ;D

Edge & Adam look great as always, and thankfully finally Larry cut & washed his hair + shaved! He looks much better.

If you read the article carefully, nowhere does it say that Q heard the entire album. They heard 7 songs one day, then Bono played a couple more some other day, etc.

Didn't Eno like Cedars of Lebannon? There's a song listed called Breathe where it says Eno loves that one.  Maybe they changed the name of the song.  Anyways when everyone watched the photo shoot, was everyone like me trying to hear the songs in the background to see if its from the album?   :P

"(...)Among other instantly striking tracks are Get Your Boots On, a heaving electro-rocker that may mark the destination point the band had been seeking on Pop(...)"

We'll find out very quickly if that statement is true (and...boy, am I wishing for it to be !), then we'll have a clue for all the rest of that teasing...
Title: Re: Q Mag. Mini-Site is (kinda) online
Post by: Aburrow on December 22, 2008, 11:11:41 AM
"Heaving electro-rocker" definitely has a whiff of Discotheque about it, as well as Mofo and Staring at the Sun. This album could be a throwback to the Pop days of yore! This would not be a bad thing!

Yeah, I strained and strained to make out something of the music in the video background, but only bits n pieces made it through. The odd vocal here and there, some "electro-rock," maybe a little percussion. Otherwise, nice job of teasing us, guys!

I had no idea how much I want this album but now I am DYING.

I haven't heard anything about a single release date except speculation (and done some speculating on my own). There may have been something more solid on that somewhere, I don't know. I'd say we're very, very close.

All I can say is ...

That's NOT new U2 playing in the video. I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit and Should I Stay Or Should I Go.

Adam is talking about "African influences" impacting the new album so that's exciting. Damn, I wish we could get just a little snippet!!!!!!!!!!!!
Title: Re: Q Mag. Mini-Site is (kinda) online
Post by: zip on December 22, 2008, 11:37:14 AM
I'm still sticking with my "gut instinct" on the single release being either 31 december or 1 january (new years day anyone ???? )  As for the "POP" influences . I remember reading an article seems like ages ago where the boys were knocking around the idea to either re-record or re-produce the entire "POP" album. I think the compromise was the remixes on the greatest hits collection which were heads and shoulders over the original versions.  However we see it (or hear it) I think this record is going to be something special !

The quiz on the Q site is working (I got 15 out of 20 right, but I've only been a fan since HTDAAB.) FYI, the quiz comes up with one of the answers filled in; you have to click on the one you think is right.

I think the eyeliner is amusing. I wonder if he got the idea from Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day. Edge and Adam look appropriately hot, and Larry, well, Larry can wear a hoodie to my house any day.

If my memory serves me well...on previous releases, U2's new single was always released a month (or so) before the album and radio airplay another month prior to that, so...you should be about right for airplay, not the release.

I'm psyched for the "hitherto unheard, funky selves." Very intriguing.

I don't know how I feel about the Unforgettable Fire allusions. I'm beginning to like TUF more and more, but it's definitely something that takes some getting used to, not something that blows your mind right away.

Love Larry in the hoodie! And though Adam looks about 30 years older than Larry, he also looks great. Like some really awesome grandpa.

I'm sure Gavin has a few more ideas up his sleeve.  Could Bono drift more into Virgin Prunes territory?

I really think the eyeliner bit was a typical "Bono moment" they're getting ready for the shoot and suddenly he gets the idea and voila !  I wouldn't expect it being a semi-permanent thing. Perhaps it's something he's formulating for the tour along with the bowler and brolly. Adam, Edge and Larry are looking as I said earlier in fighting shape......

I am not a native english speaker, so please help if you are. in the Q article it says ''Bono treated Q to a private audience of two further unfinished tracks (one of them is NLOTH)'' and then ''One other track, Every Breaking Wave...'' ok, does it mean Every Breaking Wave is one of those ''two further unfinished tracks ''? if not, then we are talking about 3 tracks.
and, together with the seven tracks Q initially heard (although they only named 6 of them, Magnificent, Crazy Tonight, Stand Up, Get Your Boots On, Winter, Unknown Caller ), plus 2 with ''particular excitement'', Moment Of Surrender and Breathe, Q totally heard as many as 12 tracks.
it's my first post so be gentle to me please.

Good question and thanks for posting.

I had to look back at the Q mag. article, and it looks to me like they are choosing between their 2 versions of the song "No Line on the Horizon" (that is song 1) and the second song is "Every Breaking Wave".  My count is at least 10 songs on the new album, but the final number and listing will be finalized when the band posts that.  The album page for the @u2 web site is also cautious in that regard.

I like the fact that the band is still considering different versions of the songs, as that means that they could mix it up live, with different versions on different nights (wouldn't that be awesome?).  I am also wondering which songs have been modified into the ones that will end up on the new album.  They often do that as a song evolves (Always -> Beautiful Day, etc.).

I look forward to your future contributions to the discussions and I really like your username.

I would freak out if Bono and the boys went into more Virgin Prune terrritory. It would be great for me. Still, there will never be another Virgin Prunes. They are in a league of their own when it comes to originality. U2 is amazing in their own way-just a different way from their mates. I love that they are so different and remain close friends for so many years.

Don't know if it's been mentioned before, Bono wears the same jacket in the Q video and I Believe in Father Christmas.
I am all for him becoming robert smith (without crazy hair), but he shd have shaved first.

I don't think it was a spontaneous thing, seeing as how he had the eyeliner on in the "Father Christmas" video as well.

Magazines always do that Nielsen. The fashion ones have February issues out in January. It doesn't make too much sense, does it?

Must be coz I looked yesterday (31st) and it wasnt in - kind of unusual for Q because when I get it it usually appears a few days before the end of the year. Maybe its this 2009 is going to be our year stuff?

I think Q literally wanted their magazine to start with a bang - no - an atomic bomb (pun intended). So they stuck with New Years Day (again, pun intended  ;D)

'Q' magazine album reviews are always one of the first I read, along with NME. From what I remember these are the marks they have given for the last few U2 albums.

'Q'

AB          5 stars  (out of 5)
Z            4 stars
P            3 stars
ALYCLB    4 stars
HTDAAB   4 stars

'NME'

AB          7  (out of 10)
Z            6
P            ?
ATYCLB   7
HTDAAB   9

Lets hope 'No Line' gets five stars and a 10.

It goes to show that when it comes to making consistently good albums, U2 is the band to go to  ;)

They are allways dated as month ahead! I think it is a time zone thing, ie the February issues may come out in the USA in February!

Thats just a theory...

It's a psychological sales tool...it seems like you are getting something before you should and it increased your urge to buy it. That's also why we are able to buy cars for the next model year months before that year actually comes about.

Is anyone else as excited as I am with Q's description of "Moment of Surrender"?

A "seven-minute epic recorded in a single take"? Sounds familiar...  :)
