It is inevitable that Boots will be on the setlist and possibly early on as well.

Dont be surprise if Boots turned out to be one of those songs that sound nice (if not great) live.

It hasn't been great or even good live.  It's been flat as hell.  The song relies heavily on multiple percussion tracks to drive it and maintain momentum (especially during "let me in the sound" Zeppelin section).

I agree that the live versions so far haven't been good - i've actually described one or two as dire. It's still going to be in the set, though, and i want it to be. I just really hope they can nail it properly for the tour.

You'll be getting an early beer.  Judging by past tours, 1st songs released, is 2nd song played. Drink up my friend!

It's one of U2's worst songs ever, probably the worst. Lillywhite said it best 'a beck b side'.

There's nothing to get about boots, it's a silly bubblegum tune with nothing but a half decent rhythm section. The song's chief problem is the riff isn't up to scratch, it works fine as a bass line but doesn't work as a lead guitar riff whatsoever. Listen to how Edge comes in and out of the song hitting a few power chords now and again and then disappearing from the song. Chief Justice Mullen probably advocated the inclusion of this song on the album because it is undoubtedly his song. I am a huge, huge U2 fan but for me and the majority of general music listeners think it is not a well executed song. It has some good vocal sections but it has been constructed in a way where the song doesn't have a natural flow. If it was so brilliant then it would have got to number one or done well commercially, this was not the case. It was U2's lead single and is one of the key reasons why the album hasn't done well since it's release.

Having said all of this I will undoubtedly sing along come July 24th because I love the band, I just find the song slightly embarassing

I respect your take, yet disagree. I think Boots is MUCH better than Crazy ( the next single ). If anything off this album is embarrassing - its Crazy. To each their own...

So Crazy's guitar solo doesn't make the hairs on the back of your neck stand  on end? It doesn't give you a glimpse into the past of the joshua tree or i still haven't found? Maybe it's just me then...Obviously it suffers lyrically but I think musically it's a gem of a song which is incredibly uplifting. I just think U2 are a little preoccupied with writing the ultimate pop tune and have been for the last few years; having said that I think it's a beautiful track in places

I think there are definitely some beautiful elements to Crazy, but the kicker is definitely the lyric. Boots has just as many great elements for me personally. And I have no problem at all with the lyric. I understand what Crazy is meant to be, I just can hear the band singing
You know we'll go crazy
You know we'll go crazy
You know we'll go crazy, if we don't go crazy tonight!

I respect the band's want/need to do a song like this. And don't get me wrong - I'm not one of these spoiled U2 fans complaining about it to such an extent. It's the only song on what is an otherwise great album that doesn't fit for me, is all.

Yes those lyrics are rather stupid when you look at them, but they kinda work. I don't like the close of the song much, and the strange noises which are thrown into the mix at the beginning

It surprises me that anyone would think they would not play Boots. It would shock me if they did not. Well while everyone who hates the song is going to the bathroom or getting a drink, I will be dancing in the aisle  ;D!  Can't wait.

I love Boots. Beside that, Larry needs a chance to show off his drumming. Sometimes he has to hold back a bit too much.

I hate Boots.  If they have to play this I wish to God they'd skip Elevation.

Of Boots, Elevation, and Vertigo, only Vertigo does not suck.

It is really contrived and dorky.  But so is the entire song.

Hmm - I like them all.  Elevation best, then Vertigo, then Boots.  But then I also don't get why Wild Honey is so universally hated.  I don't think there's anything wrong with having some humor in a U2 song . . .

I would not be sad to see elevation go - it became tired sounding even during the last tour> perfect for the Elevation tour - but beyond that, no to much ( IMO )

Its got a good beat and you can dance to it. I say let them play the heck out of it.

I agree. Why don't we let such great musicians and entertainers have fun with their music every now and then? We expect everything to be super-heavy-on-the-emotions, which they can do quite well. But why can't we let them let loose and have a fun tune that we can dance to and enjoy the heck out of?

Yes indeed. Have you heard Zooropa or Pop? Both purposely are very danceable albums. Larry and Adam can get very funky when they need too.

Once upon a time (goes the legend) U2 fans were supposed to be more discerning, challenging, and rigorous.  No, we weren't (generally) into hair metal, Madonna, or Phil Collins, all of whom produced danceable pap featuring a good beat.  But then we were also considered, not unlike the band themselves, uber serious sad-sack killjoys.  So the band made their way to "Boots," I'm just not coming along on this ride.

How awesome would it be if every time you opened this threat, you heard the GOYB riff playing over and over and over? It would just make this whole topic more polarizing than it already is! Get On Your Boots: Those who love it, love it. Those who don't.... Should lighten up a little!!

Yeah hey heyyyy!   ;D

I think Boots will be great live.  Even if you don't like the song much, I think it will be hard not to really get into it.

It reminds me of Vertigo and how sick of it I was by the time the tour rolled around.  I would always skip right over it when listening to HTDAAB.  I wasn't looking forward to it being played live, but once you're there in the moment everything changes.

Vertigo rocks live, and I'm sure Boots will also.

Yeah, pretty much. Being there in the moment can change your mind about a lot of songs.

Almost certainly will be song number 2.
Typical U2 shows have some longer, drawn out opening like Zoo Station, Zooropa, Pop Music, City, Streets (?)..... and then kick into their pacey launch single - The Fly, Beautiful Day, Vertigo. They've kicked off shows with Vertigo but this is rarer, they prefer to have a start that builds then WHAM!

I don't mind Boots, it's grown on me. Play it this tour then drop it forever boys :)

Like others have said, Boots will be one of the centerpieces to kick off the show in high gear . . . and by now it'll be as brilliant (or more so) live as it is on the album. It's the kind of song that U2 is all about.

I sure hope you're right, I still have this love/hate relationship with that song. One day I'm really into it, the other day I just can't stand it.

I can imagine a whole stadium clapping to the "Let me in the sound" part, though, that would be cool ;-)

I thought it was a weak choice as the first single, but I actually liked it a bit better when I heard them perform it on Letterman and GMA. I think it will translate pretty well in a stadium setting.

This. I'm not a big fan of the song (though I don't hate it, far from one of my favorites though), but whether we like it or not, it's going to be played. I'd much rather have another song take it's spot but it isn't going to happen. I'm over it.

What I'm NOT over is the fact that I possibly won't hear any of my favorite U2 songs (WOWY, One, Streets, Still Haven't Found). I've never had the chance to see them live until this year, and I'll be extremely bummed if I don't hear even one of those iconic songs.

Boots WILL and has to be played on this tour so let's just all get over that.

It's also not my favorite U2 song but it works as the #6 track on the album. Also, like others I thought the first live performances of this song were rather weak. I do have hopes that they have since tweaked the live arrangements even more and will give it some much needed life during the 360 tour.

The guitar intro and outro alone will make the crowed jump from the seats.

They are going to play 'Boots' twice, just like they did with 'Vertigo' at some shows!   So you can buy your beer the first time, and pee the second.
