well that's 9000 more than Lady Gaga which for me means decline as there ever was one. Not of the record but the quality of the music industry in general. Is it me or is this actually pathetic?

lady Gaga has been selling more copies then no line on the horizon for months now , shes selling 50,000 a week in the usa alone on a consistent basis. u2 were over a million copies infront of her at one stage now its just below 600,000.if this trend carries on u2 will need a boost in sales to stay above gaga and emineim

So u2 is competing with Lady gaga. that's really sad. So this is what the "music industry" has become" damn when I grew up in the 80's even the music in the billboard (or the top 40 as we have it here) had some great tunes. Not all but most of it was very listenable. those were the days when The cure, Simple minds, u2, Duran duran etc used the reign those list. Some songs deserved to be number one in those days. Nowadays 99% is very horrible or not interesting creativity. Glad I grew up in the 70's and 80's and listen to music from the 50 and 60's also

a couple of facts:

1.  Lady Gagas came out before NLOTH so NLOTH is selling better
2.  ALbums like Miley Cyrus and Eminem have been out a lot shorter of time and already are close

I have heard Graffiti Soul beginning to end 4 times and all I can say is that since my expectations were zero, it's decent. My expectations for U2 were a lot higher and they did not disappoint.

Finally someone who understands this album on a similar level to me. It's an entirely different beast from the rest of their catalog, which makes it so interesting.

As for the sales thing, I think some people forget that nearly three million people is still a really big number.

Haven't paid attention to Simple Minds for a while Play and have all their albums up to Once in a lifetime and downloaded the one beofre this one which was decent but this one is really good.
Have to Disagree,Nloth is a real let down for me.I would take Graffiti Soul over it anyday.
I'm listening to Simple mind graffiti soul right now. Doesn't sound bad first song was very good.

yeah, its Great try Stars will lead the way,This is it,Light Travels and Kiss and Fly also.
Cheers
You're right great album. Didn't expect that. This it is a very very great song.

I liked Black and White 050505, but this album is even Better,Bought this album just because of their last effort in 2005,and was quite Surprised about the song Quality,Can't stop listening to it lol.

I agree Grafitti Soul is a Far Better album,I've said this to others on this forum and speaking to people in General about Comparing the two albums, and been slated and don't know why,and also why many U2 fans are being so defensive about the Quality of Nloth.

because some fans can't reason objectively. The music is part of their every day existence and to criticise that is criticising them (at least that's how they see it) That's why they will defend even the not so good albums of Their band till the end of time. I love U2 but when I listened to ATYCLB for the first time I was like. What is this wack stuff. Tried and tried to lsiten to it but it was a gruelling experience. There was nothing to gain there. Then cam HTDAAB which was even worse. Now we have No line A step up. But from what?

If I put on any other U2 album prior to ATYCLB HTDAAB Or No Line I'll sit right through it and love it. (because there was something to gain there)I haven't stopped listening to ZOORAPA since it came out.

Now coming back to Simple Minds. I haven't payed any attention to what they were doing in the 90's bought the 05050 thought it was ok but not great but this albums is damn great. I had absolutll no expectation about ti and I'm so surprised by it. Can't stop listening to it. that;s what the last u2's are missing that you want to revisit it over and over again.

Any way thanks for leading me to this great record which is getting rave reviews everywhere

Nut their last three efforts have been Mwaaah and totally overrated.

I agree with what you are Saying,U2 are my Favourite band and always will be,I love the 90's U2 best AB,Zoo,Pop etc and i Liked ATYCLB and HTDAAB Also, they maybe weren't up to the Standards of JT and AB but on the Grand Scale of things Were Good Albums and when these albums first came out,i listened religiously for about 6 months lol, something which Nloth failed to do I listened to it for about a month Solid and Wasn't Impressed, and Got Fed up with it Really Quickly,Don't get me Wrong there some Good songs on the Album but there is Definitely something Missing.

The two of you may talk about being objective, but you're not more objective than any fans who like the new album. You just happen not to like it in the same way that other do. I think we all need to accept that peoples' opinions will differ and not hold our own thoughts as gospel. I'm aware that this is true for both sides of the argument but I object to being looked down on for thinking NLOTH is a great album.

The fire is missing. There some hints of it on ATYCLB When I look at the world had the urgency but after that It kinda faded. No Line has Magnificent is good but not great. Yeah I'll always be a fan till the day I die but I'm afraid that the future of this band will be a blend one. Or Maybe They'll surprise me Like Simple Minds did with Graffiti soul. Been playing it very loud. When it's finished I just put it back again.  great album. It has beaten No line.

I wonder if kasabians new album will get up there its a one of their best yet. meanwhile muse are releasing theres in sept 14th so its going to be big.

kasabians world wide appeal is pretty small compared to the giants u2!. miley cyrus will trash them unfortunately!. i agree though, there album is very good, fire and underdog are great singles. shame u2 have released songs from nloth in the wrong order. breathe should be the last release....i hope. mag should of been first then breathe then no line followed by another.

I agree. For Lady Gaga to sell more than any artist is very sad.  I had such high hopes for Depeche Mode's album too. What happened?

Here's a snapshot review of Graffiti Soul, which I had heard twice completely.

Simple Minds has obviously gone the Coldplay quick fix route: simple melodies hooks and lyrics abound. There is nothing wrong with that but boy, have they come up with tons better material over their career. Huge SM fans will love it, but it breaks no new ground and sticks to a traditional formula. Jim Kerr's voice is completely shot, too.

This Depeche Mode pathology some members have is getting pathetic. it sold good and was a far better record than No Line. At least it had balls.

1)U2
2)DM
3)REM

Sadly that's what the genera public thinks, a shame if you ask me. Most of her music is just nonsense lyrics and electronic noise.

it's a great album, better than NLOTH, and I like NLOTH

I like both...but NLOTH is far superior in almost every way. It just has a depth that few albums reach. All the songs on NLOTH are well written, and well developed with great use of instrumentation, lots of layers and fine details, and a good variance of tempo, and mix of genres. It's very, very deep. MOS is outstanding...it's getting close to 'One' for me as is 'Unknown Caller'.

And I'm glad to hear it's selling well. Not that it matters so much, but it's great to see music that is 'good' for once, rise to the top. I'm tired of Lady NA-DA and all these other jokers out there. Lady Nada wore a zipper on her eye at the Grammys i think. She should do us a favor and zipper her entire head closed. I think NLOTH is going to sell a lot more when this tour starts rolling, as long as it starts well and is everything they are trying to accomplish. I sure know a lot of people traveling to Barcelona to see it! Lucky bums.  :-[

been listening to the New Simple Minds every day now. I really love this album. it's the first one since Sparkle in the rain That really matters. Great job guys Keep it up. yeah It's a better album than No line. They're are far better and much more fun song and melodies on their album. The have great hooks atmosphere and the album doesn't go boring after  songs like No line does. You can't stop getting the songs out of your head. No line doesn't have a song that really sticks in your head. Graffiti soul has that in abundance gerat Job guys Great job. Keep it up. And yes to the No lin fans it won't sell as much as the U2 album but it's far better. it's about quality not quantity and No line is lacking quality.

No line has plenty of quality, just not not enough consistency.

What  I like about Graffiti Soul is that they kept it short, put the best songs on there and made it more like an old school vinyl album running at about 40 minutes.

Imagine NLOTH without Boots. Crazy and Comedy, re-arrange the running order a bit and put in Winter, more consistent, a better album.

Why do so many bands feel the need to make album 60+ minutes without having 60+ minutes of high quality material ? If you've got a lot of quality material save some for later with single releases, or even save some for future albums. Led Zeppelin were always doing that. Then when they didn't do that they got a bit inconsistent with Physical Graffiti.

When I first played No line it where the first 2 songs which I really liked. The rest I couldn't get into. I liked some elements of Fez but as a whole it doesn't compare to let's say In your Blue room (brilliant and extremely beautiful)
Unknown caller is not a good song but liked the stretched out end of it.  But at the end the songs didn't grab me by the throat like the time when I listened to the Joshua tree Unforgeable fore achtung baby or zooropa. They just didn't stick. It's simply not up there.

Songs like Breathe, Get on your boots (absolutely horrendous and embarrassing to say the least)  stand up comedy, and I'll go crazy just screw up the whole record. if they left those songs of it would have been a better album. These days you have artist who put as much of 16 very bad songs on they're albums. after song 2 you're already bored with the nothing they have to say.

You're absolute right when you say the it's better to have 8 great songs and keep it short (R.E.M Accelerate runs less than 30 minutes which takes balls these days and is one of their better albums in years)

What I like about about graffiti soul is that it's short and very consistent. I listened to rocket first on youtube and thought that it wasn't a very good song but if you listen to it on the album it's quite fun
It works. next you album don't add fillers. Keep it short and tight as possible and kick some ass.

Couldn't disagree more. This album has more variance of song styles/genres than many, and yet they tie in together brilliantly. Look, I like the Minds but while they present songs that are ballsy and fun, U2 are much more deep. NLOTH is even recorded with so many more layers and there is more a sense of space in the sound. The Minds production is also good but very different - it's clear Pop-Rock production. Very 'in your face'. They both have their brilliant moments so I wouldn't trash either. I've got both on rotation quite often!

There is no filler at all on NLOTH. But if you want only 1 emotion-color-genre-sound than NLOTH is not your album.

Compared to the really good U2 stuff No line sounds like band strugling for ideas and ending up no where in particulair. if I want to hear Bono going deep I'll pput on war UF JT AB ZO or even some songs on POp and Passengers. But No line simply sounds very sad and not in good way.

Simple minds did a far better job this time with their straight in your face apraoch and it worked.

If i want emetion driven music these days I'll play Nick Drake or even the Fleet foxes did a far more better job than U2 with their very emotional driven album. That's also one of the best albums this year. better than the u2 one. even bono loves that album

yeah, I guess we will agree to disagree. Nick Drake is good. Fleet Foxes, well so far I think they are an overrated snooze. I bought the album but eh? I don't get the fuss. I had seen them Live on TV and they sucked rotten eggs. NLOTH is deep in a much different way than these other two artists. Honestly, NLOTH if I have to fight these albums like 2 pitbulls (I hate doing this), but NLOTH just kills the new Simple Minds. It rips it apart...the flesh of graffiti soul is utterly mauled off it's skeleton. I still like the album a lot however.

Not sure I could or would want to be more graphic about how i feel.

Nick drake's records will be remember longer than No line which seems to be forgotten by the masses already except U2's hardcore fans. For me it's borefest compared to u2 best stuff. Totally not intereresting at all.
People will come to their shows but because it's u2. Remember the stones tours most of the times exceed U2 in numbers of people atteneding but their record saels are really sad.

This is bound to happen with a band like u2 too. People move on and that's life.

Kinda funny that I haven't played a Simple Minds record on heavy rotation in years. This one I keep playing over and over again. U2 owned the second part of the 80's and the first half of the 90's but for me tthose glory days are gone.

They will be keeping putting out records and touring fans will buy their stuff because U2 made e big mark in music industry but it doesn't mean their music  will remain equally great as in the past. Maybe in a couple of years they'll suddenly wake up and smell the coffee and make a brilliant record but for it's just bland after bland.

And Nick Drake is GOD. Damn his music really hits me on an emotioanl level. Pink Moon is one of the most beautiful records ever recorded. on and emotional level No line sound very pethatic and lam compared to what Drake pured out of his soul. Try  the song: A place to be. that soo heart breakingly beautiful

you see things from a much different angle. No Line is catching speed my friend. I've heard a lot of people talking about it lately and checking out the tour. I've seen 'indie' teen types wearing War t-shirts lately. The album is awesome. I don't know why you insist on comparing a band to a solo artist like 'Nick Drake', but I'd recommend that you stop listening to No Line. You don't like it so why bother. It has become so boring to hear the same old people ranting that they don't like the album. It's like there are a couple of wind up dolls that suddenly learned to use a computer on this forum.

Again...if you don't like it - don't listen to it. It's that simple. TRUST me...we all know your opinion already on this. We know how much you prefer Nick Drake and Simple Minds. We've heard you diss NLOTH more than we've heard Magnificent on the radio, sadly. All of us have heard you over and over and over and over and over again and again and again. OKAY? Isn't there a NLOTH HATERS Thread that you can go autopilot on and say the same stuff? Enough already, please.

whatever. it's more like a commercial actually. it was an opinion originally, the first 20 x's. not so much now.

And, are you on topic here? This is about U2 having the best selling album. Dragging Nick Drake into this seems way off. Simple Minds...ehh..okay you could at least argue why they don't have the top selling album as compared to why U2 does. But I haven't heard anyone mention that specifically. Everyone pretty much knows why anyway without even saying it.

Great reply, and i second everything you said, its getting old and boring now, this is a great time to be a u2 fan with the tour just starting,we should be celebrating it,not pouring negativity over everything, whether its the set lists or the album or whatever.

So it's prohibited to make and measure Nick drakes high quality to the low quality output of U2's album? Why? It happens to be that I till last year never heard of drake and discovered it and was pleasantly surprised. The quality of his music actually transcends that of u2.

With Simple Mind I had absolutely no expectations. And it kicks but. With U2 I always have very high expectation and they just don't seem to be able to deliver anymore. you can say a lot about their last record but a joshua tree (in quality) it simply ain't. It doesn't have to be but don't scream of your lungs that it is. (i'm not talking about you I'm talking about Bono screaming that it's such a great record etc and it turns out it just ain't

of course not. but it's apples and oranges my friend. they are both tasty. you like oranges more. that is fine. my point is just that wouldn't there be a thread that is more suited to this argument? surely, not every thread is appropriate or even most conducive to making your case that Nick Drake is better than U2. It seems that in order to compare them on this specific thread, you would have to at least bring Nick Drake back from the dead so that he could've released a brand new studio album in 2009. And then, argue why that album should or shouldn't be the best selling album over U2 in 2009. But, unless you've got an incredible connection with a much higher power - I don't think that's going to happen.

I am glad however that you've discovered Nick Drake and Simple Minds. I respect them both as artists and value their music. I am also thrilled that U2 are still making high quality music that is beyond categorization. And, I am very happy for them that their accomplishments are being recognized, partly by the sales of the new album and its momentum. The tour could make the album's recognition even bigger! But regardless, it's about the music, and so it will be great to witness these songs come alive.

nothing against Susan Boyle...she has a pretty voice. But, we all know it's because of a novelty that she's selling so many albums. There are many people with better voices who can't sell their CD's.

But there again, if U2 has to come in 2nd LOL I'd rather it be to her than Fall Out Boy or some other lame group.

NLOTH IS SO FAR THE BEST SELLING CD OF 2009 WORLD WIDE, OVER 3 MILLION COPIES SO FAR,  PLUS U2 HAD THE BEST OPENING WEEK OF 2009 WORLD WIDE BEATING EVEN EMINEM.PLUS ANOTHER THING WHY IS EVERYONE PICKING ON U2,S SALES LOOK AT GREEN DAY ONLY 450,000 WORLD WIDE FIRST WEEK PLUS LAST WEEK ONLY 40,000 IN THE US THE CD IS NOT EVEN AT 600,000 IN THE US,BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN NOT EVEN 600,000,BON JOVI ,MADONNA HAD CD,S OUT IN THE LAST FEW YEARS THAT DIDN,T EVEN GO PLATINUM PRINCE,S NEW CD IS NO WHERE TO BE FOUND BUT NOONE HEARS ABOUT THAT.PLUS U2,S CD IS APPROACHING PLATINUM AND NOONE TALKS ABOUT HOW U2,S CD WAS ILLEGALLY DOWNLOADED  450,000 TIMES IN THE USA A WEEK BEFORE THE CD EVEN CAME OUT ,AND IT,S  BEEN REPORTED THE CD WAS ILLEGALLY DOWNLOADED OVER 800,000 TIMES TO DATE IN THE US ALONE ADD THAT TO WHAT THE CD SOLD LEGALLY, AND U2 IS DOING JUST FINE , PLUS THEY SOLD OVER 2.8 MILLION TICKETS FOR THE 360 TOUR ALREADY ADD THAT UP TO THERE AVERAGE TICKET PRICE AT ABOUT 125.00 THIS TOUR WHEN SAID AND DONE IS EASILY GONNA BE THE HIGHEST GROSSING TOUR OF ALL TIME WAY TO GO U2 THANK YOU.
Susan Boyle Sold 5 million copies. so she must be a bteer artist than U2 selling 5 million copeis and all

She hasnt sold that many mate it has shipped 5 million worldwide but not sold

uk sales as of sunday

3 Susan Boyle – I Dreamed A Dream - 989,720

usa sales

1) Susan Boyle – I Dreamed A Dream (After 2 weeks – 1,224,196) 650,000 predicted this week

She has also shifted a 200,000 in austraila

Those are her 3 big markets , anywhere else it hasnt done anywhere near as good.

Well Lady Gaga sold a million than U2 so she must be million times better artist than U2.

I don't get why you always go on about the sales being bad and that it's reflective of how bad NLOTH is. But when someone shows that compared to other artists the sales are good; you proceed to take the pi*s and suggest sales are irrelevant. Your arguments are inconsistent if I may say so :P

He loves to just dance, when he's in a bad romance. He enjoys playing the love game and showing his pokerface to everyone. Eh, eh, I suppose I have nothing else to say, other than the fact that the paparazzi are coming ...

Thanks for that! And I guess that was the answer I was looking for-- if even JT, ATYCLB, HTDAAB or AB weren't the best seller of the year, well it hardly proves that they are slipping if NLOTH isn't.

U2 remains the greatest band in the entire universe!!! ;)
Nope there's a far better band called: Nesdredida who live on a planet next to the Utara system in the Ocurai Nebula, You know just right of the Centara system who sold Six billion records this Optala decade.

yeah so? He outsold u2 and everybody else. It's not only that he died but that he died and his music and legacy was so extremely good. I doubt that when Bono dies he'll sell millions of records has to do with people hating Bono ass these days and loving Michael. Michael's legacy and iconography is far bigger and legendary than U2's ever be. Bono wished he was as big as Michael he isn't and never was.

They didn't hate him. I never believed the rumours. Don't under estimate how many people really can't stand Bono I had a friend over today and out of the blue he started talking how much he dislikes Bono these days.

No. 3 - not bad at all. despite all the negativisms that have lurked and still lurking around.

U2 remains the greatest band in the entire universe!!! ;)
Nope there's a far better band called: Nesdredida who live on a planet next to the Utara system in the Ocurai Nebula, You know just right of the Centara system who sold Six billion records this Optala decade.

oh really? do they have a fan site, too? a forum like this? can i have a link? :D

JA - you're obviously a U2 hater.

No he isn't, he's just a tedious troll. He was amusing at first, but the last 700 posts or so just don't cut it, really; they're bland and uninteresting rehashes on the same familiar themes.

also, MJ didnt release an album this year ::)  his sales were affected for other reasons
Bono wished he was as big as Michael he isn't and never was.

 ;D ;D

God am you still going on aboput MJ ;D

Why do you come on a u2 fansite when your obsessed with Jackson? go on a jackson board

You say people didnt hate Mj ;D there was a great chance that this guy abused Kids so i think you will find that alot of people hated the man. I noticed all this was brushed under the carpet when he died. Music wise he was a genieus but as a person god knows what he got up too.

I don't remember it being swept under the carpet. In fact I remember people mocking him immediately after his death. People applauded his genius, but I think it's stretching it to say nobody mentioned the scandals. It's just that for a change some people talked about the MUSIC of MJ for once. I personally don't believe he was a pedophile, but I do believe he was mentally disturbed, vulnerable and naive, and got taken advantage of by lots of people. Just my impression anyway.

Your comparing a rock band with a singer/song writter / entertainer       WHY?

There are both in different leagues of their own you cannot compare the two , everything about the two acts are at the opposite end of the scale so you cannot compare them.

I agree with the poster above before he died everyone hated the guy then when he died all of a sudden everyone was in mourning.

I agree he was massive and everybody loved him before all the child abuse cases started popping up here there and everywhere.

If the guy did what was accused he dosent deserve and reconiation at all for his music. Those crimes out weigh any sucess in music.

In the general media all this was ignored when he died.

By the way michael Wasn't a paedophile.  He was rich and some very bad people went in the most horrible way possible after his money. (one of them committed suicide cause he felt so guilty after what he did to this guy)

Jackson made two decent albums (off the wall & thriller) - the rest is a mixed bag at best, a genius he most certainly was not, even with his best work he had a lot of help. A great dancer no doubt, but genius musician, songwriter etc nowhere near. The reaction to his death was pathetic, James Brown - a true genius - died not long ago and no one gave two hoots, its a sad world.

well actually I'm a James brown fan too. So when He died I was really sad. he was going to play the Paradiso that summer but I didn't go cause I thought it was to expansive. I'll see him later I thought to myself. I'm still regretting it.

But james brown inspired michael and they were friends. But there's nothing pathetic about the reaction to his death. This guy reach whole generations of people, of very various cultural backgrounds, who really loved his work deeply. When I was a kid michael was the bomb. He was the one who really broke down racial barriers in music unlike anybody before him. He crossed it without betraying his music. U2 hardly crossed into the black music market or reach that multi cultural level Michael Jackson reached.  (I'm a black man myself and can say that there are not a lot of black guys who like u2 or give a damn about u2)

Plus although I love Brown the guy was a real violent women beating p****. michael wasn't he was just a good guy who many people took advantage of.

Bono says he's the saviour of Africa but I bet that most africans don't know who the hell he is. But Michael jackson They know.

When the heck did Bono say that?

Im not second guessing MJ's impact on racial barriers, or his status as a cultural icon - all of that goes without saying. My point is that as a songwriter, musician etc he was far from a genius, the reaction was completely overblown, it had been over 20 years since he'd done anything remotely good. Take his catalogue of music on its own merits and at its best its good pop, some great melodies. Im strictly talking about the music here - not who's a wife beater or anything like that.

By the way michael Wasn't a paedophile.  He was rich and some very bad people went in the most horrible way possible after his money. (one of them committed suicide cause he felt so guilty after what he did to this guy)

In your opinion

your talking as if you knew the guy  ;D

Before his death,  he was probably the most hated and made fun of guy there was :-X

That is correct.

After his death the same people were probably mourning and saying what a genius he was and everything.
Well he was a genius and the greatest performer of the last century. u2 wished they had an album which made the impact thriller did.

Aaah but you're forgetting the 70 and 80 when He was applauded, This guy was massive. This guy was beyond huge. He still is.

What about the 80s and 90s for U2?  the same for Bono and co. too.

and i never believed he was a pedophile, but people did hate him

People call Bono a terrorist for supporting Bush, i dont think he was a terrorist

and MJ was thought to be a pedophile, and Bono is thought of a s goody-two-shoes, id much rather be Bono

They were. I loved them then. Like MJ. But U2 have declined so fast. If you sell out there's no way back. You can say what ever you want about michael he never sold out. U2 did.

And months before his death he was making the news again with his upcoming shows in London. which would've been massive, good and probably would've evoked one of the greatest comebacks ever.

so all U2 needed was to do a pepsi ad, got Macauley Culkin to rap in the boots video, float a 50ft high statue of themselves down the Thames, cancel umpteen shows at the last minute, become the laughing stock of the international press, do a nauseating interview with Oprah Winfrey, admit on national television they like to sleep with kids and release nothing of quality since Unforgettable Fire and their souls would be clean as a whistle. Jeez, why didnt anyone tell them? It could of been so much better, poor u2.

Everybody shake you Pompom

I could not agree more.  I am shaking them furiously for my year-end NLOTH celebration.

By golly, I think I finally believe you!  The first 957 times you posted negative comments about NLOTH I thought you were just stirring the pot trying to get a reaction.  Now, I see exactly what you are talking about.  NLOTH sucks....you've won me over.  Your job is done.  You can peacefully retire from these message boards and go join the Susan Boyle and Brittany Spears fan clubs as I'm sure that these message boards will be shutting down soon - it will only be a matter of days until everybody here agrees with you.  So long and I'll see you over at Susanboyle.com.

hey I'm not trying to convince you of anything. You may like it as much as you want. I think it's a weak effort from U2. But hey if you dig it you dig it. I sure as hell don't
