Title: The Never-Ending Music Quiz.
Post by: Alton Dalton on December 29, 2008, 05:40:42 AM
Ok here's the deal! The way this works is that one person asks a music related question. The next person answers this question and also asks the next question Get it?? Please no googling!! Feel free to be as diverse and know-it-allish as you want!

Ok, I'll start. Who played drums for The Who for their Live Aid performance in 1985?

Okay, I love the game idea, AltonDalton.  But if you aren't going to let us google, then I'm just stuck.  Anyone know the answer here?

I dont think it is even a question.

But I will have a guess, A drumming gorilla (for Cadbury chocolate here in the UK theydid and advert where they had a man in a gorilla suit drumming to 'In The Air Tonight' and Phil Collins was supposed to be in the suit)

I think googling should be an option but as long as you say if you googled or didnt!

Who sang with Elton John on 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart'?

OK - I don't know the answer to that question, but let me interject a suggestion, which I used myself for the "carry on the lyric game".  Start a reply and type in your answer.  Then open up another browser and use that to check the answer with Google, @u2 lyrics, whatever.  If you are right, finish your original reply.  If you are wrong, delete it without submitting (just hit "back" to return to the thread).  That way we don't have incorrect guesses cluttering up the thread, but we each restrict ourselves to ethically playing the game.

Ok, back to the game.

Uh, Miss Dark Angel, I see you did not google to confirm your answer! Paul Weller was in the Style Council but the lovely song was sung so beautifully by Tracey Thorne from Everything But The Girl.  Oh I'll give you a pass on that one because it is old and unless you liked those bands you would have no way of knowing it. Paul Weller was a good guess. Just take this advice from your forum mother- GOOGLE! ;)

Sorry, back to original members of Jackson Five?

It does not matter Hawk. It is not one particular year. It is of all time. The album is really Volume 1 of their stuff. If I give the years on their album cover I will give it away ;).

Q: Where did the name "Echo" of Echo & the Bunnymen come from?
Title: Re: The Never-Ending Music Quiz.
Post by: Hawkmoon2e on January 11, 2009, 08:49:57 PM
I've read that Will Sergeant said it was from a friend of the band. However, many fans thought it was from their original drum machine they used to use before Pete joined the band.

BTW....I'm a huge Bunnymen fan. I've seen 'em 3 times and have all of their albums. Ocean Rain is one of the best albums to come out in the 80's. In fact, I think that U2 and the Bunnymen were on a parallel course in the early years. U2 released The Unforgettable Fire and the Bunnymen released Ocean Rain. The two bands had some similar sounds to them, but the Bunnymen released their self titled album in '87, and U2 released this album called The Joshua Tree.
....and that's where the parallel course stopped.

But I love their newer stuff. They definitely had a strong comeback. Ian is still a big wa**er though!

Alright....here's another Bunnymen question:

What album does Ian McCulloch say was a big influence for the making of Ocean Rain?

And yeah, the Skynyrd answer was correct.

Eury, you were right about the Ministry song - I always thought of that one as the Goth theme song!  *wiping off the white makeup and black lipstick*

Now, then, the Velvet Underground:

Andy Warhol, manager
His club, Factory (remember Factory Girl, the movie from a couple of years ago?)
Lou Reed (Take a Walk on the Wild Side, etc.) is the most famous, but John Cale has done pretty well, too.

What Leonard Cohen song has resulted in renewed popularity of his music?  Most recently, there was a contest in Britain for the best cover.  It appeared in the first Shrek movie and has been covered by dozens of people, including Bono.  Name the song and 2 artists (other than Bono and LC, himself) who've recorded it.

Dik Evans and Neil McCormick?

I have one, even if that's wrong.

What relatively unknown guitar slinger did David Bowie enlist for studio guitar work on his album "Let's Dance"?

Stevie Ray Vaughn?? (Googled that one!)  ;)

On a related note, what accomplished guitarist did Bowie recruit for the Scary Monsters album?

Robert Fripp of King Crimson fame.

Name two songs from the 80s that 90s band, No Doubt, has recorded.

*hint:  one will be on their new album*

Wow it has been a very long time! In honor of Alton Dalton's triumphant return to the @U2 forum, I happily revive this thread in his honor!

Answer to El Jay's Q is  Come on Eileen by Dexy's Midnight Runners and It's My Life by Talk Talk if I am not mistaken!

New Question:

Which U2 member and Virgin Prunes member were actually family members because of their marriages to a pair of beautiful sisters?  (I know-typical StrongGirl question!  There is a hint there ;))

Yep - they married Aislinn ( Edge) & Rachel (Strongman) making them more than just friends for awhile. JT do you have the next question?

The song is four minutes and thirty-three seconds of absolute silence. Therefore, it has no key. Tee hee hee! ;D

Shock I believe we did this one already.

It is the Eagles Greatest Hits 1971-75 if I am not mistaken. Thriller by Michael Jackson is next.

This one may be for someone older.  Phil Oakey of the Human League and Giorgio Moroder  co wrote a song for a 1984 film of the same name. What was the title?

Funny Luie!

No Eury, it was something a bit cheesier than that!  ;D Still, I love this song and I always thought the movie was kind of sweet. It was about a computer with an old fashioned message of love!

I know you all can't wait for this answer so enjoy............. ;)

I love Metropolis by the way!  Eury, this one is definitely NOT one many people  would remember :D!  I just always loved the song for some strange reason. I suppose it was because I love Phil! The story was actually off beat and a bit ahead of its time.
