Title: Grace on ATYCLB
Post by: Caleb8844 on October 16, 2008, 07:07:27 AM
I always hear people say that grace is a strong theme on ATYCLB, but, other than the song, I'm not sure where grace is mentioned. Can anyone tell me?

I don't think it is mentioned much. I think its just the feel that it gives off. The whole Idea of the songs Walk on and f*** in a moment you can't get out of, all have a kind of Gods grace kind of feel. You know. No matter what you do God still love you kind of thing.
Ive read alot of things bono has said about the album and he always mentions grace. You just have to look at it slightly differently.

That my look on it anyway.

Edit.   I seems to think the word s. t. u. c. k is the f word. Ive tried changing it.

J33-3 in the sign on the left refers to Jeremiah 33 verse 3. In The Message it says:
'Call to me and I will answer you. I'll tell you marvelous and wondrous things that you could never figure out on your own.'

All about Grace i think...

I would be interested to how you know that the numbers in the corner refer to a Bible verse? That is very interesting. I want to know if it is a coincidence or on purpose????

Bono says so himself in 'U2 by U2'.  He says, "And then, just because advertising pays, I thought I'd put God's phone number up in the airport's digital clock.  J33.3  That's Jeremiah 33:3.  The Scripture is, 'Call unto Me and I will answer you'.  It's celestial telephony."   :)

Cool.  It doesn't surprise me at all though.  I never noticed that before.

Gods phone number, sounds like something Bono would print on the album, coolness

He's an amazing Christian...

I would love to see how many people he has made start thinking about God or turning back to God. It's awesome how he weaves his christianity into his songs without blatantly saying the words 'God' or 'Jesus' - Wake up dead man, and all of October being discounted  ;)

I know thats what I love about his lyrics. And thats what I love about the song grace. Some people say the lyrics are lame. But I think they have a certain quality.

I'd just like to go back and mention that grace is in the lyrics to Beautiful Day.

"Someone you could lend a hand
In return for grace"

You are soooooo right, just enough but not too much, enough to get some people reaching for something more... ;)

I believe the word is STUCK, the f word would not fit in the song.  His friend Michael was stuck in a problem that he couldn't let go of.  It would be like you have this math problem you're doing and you're stuck in that moment because you can't figure it out, or are you "F" in the moment you can't figure it out  Most people with a bigger vocabulary would say hey teacher I'm stuck , I can't figure it out.  It shows respect, not dishonor. ::)

:)I think it was put there on purpose.  If you really listen to the lyrics, I mean really listen, there's a reference to God-Grace in all of them.  This album is one of my favorites by the greatest band in the world.  Because if you're having a down day, just put on ATYCLB, and at least one song, will pick you up, and make you thankful that you're alive in the age of Grace.

I don't know whether your being sarcastic or serious lol.

I know its (STUCK in a moment you can't get out) and what its about. It seemed to think it was the F word when I write it in lower case.  It doesn't seem to do it anymore.

There was an issue with the way our language filter was set up at the outset.  It has since been re-adjusted and now we can get stuck all we want.

Back to the song "Grace": it's got a really cool relaxed, meditative ambient groove going on. Very graceful indeed.

Dali, that was so beautifully said. I agree 100 per cent.  I always loved Grace, but again, so many fans hate it.

Grace is one of my favorites. I always thought that it could be a killer live song...

It was a great way to end the album because it summed up the band's over all purpose for their release--much like MLK did for The Unforgettable Fire.

"Grace" is about forgiveness (no matter how badly we screw up) which I believe is the overall objective for ATYCLB --- asking God for forgiveness (When I Look at the World), friends for forgiveness (SIAMYCGOO), asking the human race to forgive itself (Walk On). That is why Grace has been known to be the "overall" theme of the album.

Or at least I think so.

 ;)
