Title: What is it with all these "snippets"?
Post by: MarlinsFan7 on August 14, 2009, 10:33:56 PM
I just can't picture U2 singing little "snippets" of O come all ye faithful as well as some of these other "snippets"

I was amazed at the quantity of snippets at today's Wembley show. Must be a record!

Its just a tool to prolong the show a bit without having to play a new song altogether.  If we didn't have snippets, then we would have a very short show.

Cheers,

Yes, the extra 60 seconds or so that could be saved could be used to play.... um... er.... 'Untitled' off Boy!!! How dare they!

Nonesense. The snippets are absolute magic and have nothing to do with the length of the concert.

Define "very short"

Yes, I know one definition is "Bono"....that's not what I mean

All he's doing there is repeat-chanting it to pump up the crowd and get them going. It's not like he's been going into full hymn-mode.

these snippets are normally part of the instrumental sections of the songs anyway. Makes the shows better and a bit less predictable.

Eddy- this is true, but wouldn't it be brilliant if this actually was the reason? Because they were horrified at the idea that without snippets, the show might be 53 seconds shorter?   :D

Questioning the snippets ...eh? WTF !  >:( >:( >:(
Every since Bono was born he has been singing snippets, it's like the lifeblood of U2!!!!
Having collected a ridiculous amount of bootlegs, many of the best moments of shows are when he does the snippets. Their greatest live song is referenced by the particular snippets within the song. In fact the best Bad I have ever heard from April 85, clocking in at a monster 16 minutes with about 20 snippets, is the greatest thing I ever heard.
And what U2 fan doesn't love the Shine like stars add on to WOWU .

If you don't like snippets then stay at home and listen to the records. Or go watch Coldplay !!

U2 have turned their shows into a snippetfest.

Never in their history of touring have they done as many snippets as they are doing now.  Before the snippets were put for a reason and add meaning to the song.

Now the snippets are forced and out of place, and serve to destroy the sanctity and lyrical meaning of the song.  Now we even get snippets of two songs in one U2 song.  Sometimes we get snippets in the intro then the outro.

What is the point really? What is U2's true purpose for all of this?  We'll never know.

But it sure makes a decent way to pass the time while Dallas is busy changing The Edge's guitar and figuring out the effects.

Cheers,

J

The Red Rocks concert has a very short snippet of Drowning Man ; which means that snippets have always been a part of U2 concerts..

if you snippet your own song inside one of your own songs you are being completely lame.  I have always loved Bono's snippets just not "40" inside Bad.

I like "40" inside Bad. I prefer "40" to be played in full, but I enjoy it as a snippet.

I think it depends on the snippet and the context.

I thought Gloria worked well in Exit, and lots of things work well in Bad.

Last tour (and a few times since then) they did Rock the Casbah inside of SBS, and it REALLY didn't work for me - completely against the mood of the song, IMHO.

I think that if they are done right they can work really well, and Bono has been doing them forever.

Maybe in Sheffield we'll get some Arctic Monkeys snippets,or even Def Leppard,Bono singing pour some sugar on me,now that would be funny!  ;D

It works kind of magical to me and many others... Perhaps you didn't listen to UTEOTW with break on through (doors) as a snippet, or vertigo - rock and roll (led zep)... I'd goosebums everywhere!

U2 fan hat: The thing is, most of what's being listed as a snippet is incorrect. When Bono shouts "All You Need Is Love" one time during STREETS, it's not a snippet. When he sings one-and-a-half lines from "Miss Sarajevo" during MAGNIFICENT, it's not a snippet. To list those things as part of U2's setlist is misleading. It gives the impression that U2 actually performed at least part of those songs, when in reality it's just Bono shouting out a random couple words.

Having been on forums for about 15 years now, there's really few things better at killing a discussion than someone busting out dictionary definitions, but whatever ... I'll play along.

Do you own the Best Buy CD that was released in 2001? It has three live songs from the Boston Elevation DVD, including "I Will Follow." Here are the lyrics to that version of that song:

Are you seriously going to suggest that Bono sang a snippet of "Amazing Grace" in this version?

Course not, as only one line was used. Not enough to me.

I like the Chicago DVD from Vertigo tour...Bono sings Stories for Boys inside of Vertigo. Truly blending the old and new...bring on the snippets!!

All I did was provide a definition for the guy who needed it.

Another popular discussion killer since the Usenet days is the straw man argument.

All we need now is a Hitler-reference (I forget what it's called) and we'll have the trifecta.

Cheers

I think what Bono mostly adds are lyrically snippets.  and i do agree it is very misleading in the set lists.  the all you need is love in streets is really not much of anything.  while stand by me can be considered an actual musical snippet.

Yesterday during "Streets", Bono said the word "Gloria" once. That's now being listed as a snippet of "Gloria" on the web (not on U2tours.com, which I help run).

In that context, every time he said Willie's name is a snippet of some song with "Willie" in the lyrics. :)

Too funny m2!!!!  I listened to the concert Thursday. When I started reading about the "Gloria" snippet on Streets I thought I was losing my mind!  :D  I didn't hear it. I am a big fan of "Gloria" so I thought how on earth did I miss it?!! Now this explains it all. I am so relieved to know I am not going crazy.   For the record, you are 100 percent correct here-that is NOT a snippet.  ;)

You know, I've been staying out of this, but... I certainly agree that when Bono sings a few lines of, say, "Blackbird" to the real melody of that song, or used to put "Let's Twist Again" in 2 Hearts, that is one kind of thing, and when he shouts "Gloria" once, that's something different.

If you are really tracking things, though, isn't knowing about both interesting?  The "O come all ye faithful" thing is a good example: I think especially given Neil McC's explanation of the function of the Crazy remix in the show, the choice to yell that line every night does mean something.  It's not sung the way "Blackbird" is as a "snippet," but there is an intention behind it.

Those tiny little quotations are something Bono has been doing forever and clearly finds meaningful, to use a pretentious term, in an intertextual way.  So if some site were really obsessive, I wonder if the thing to do might not be to have two categories: song snippets, and lyrics quoted or "shoutouts."  [runs to hide in a cave]

If you listen again you can hear , en an domini etc, ok my latin is very good lool But he definitely said more than just Gloria. But you're right, referenced snippets used to be more substantial. But it is still great to hear even if it is only one line or two. I'm sure he does it as a nod to the fans, like A Day Without Me during UF at Wembley. It's almost like a game to guess the snippet, I told my mate he said a couple of lines of A Day Without Me but he didn't hear it. But was excited to hear he did.
For that split second it takes you back to the halycon days when it all began .
Hats off to Bono, it's the little things that make you happy !

I only heard 'Gloria' at the time, but upon a relisten, it *does* sound like he said "Gloria in (I can't make it out but it could VERY easily be 'Exelsis' or 'Te Domine') ,  Gloria"....  :-\

He says Gloria earlier in the song but later on he clearly sings Gloria...in te domine as the song ends ! Again don't know if this really qualifies as a snippet but it is cool to hear for us oldies !

OK, I have investigated!    ;)

He sings the first Gloria approximately 4 and a half minutes in and then about 35 seconds later he sings Gloria in te domine Gloria. In no way could it be regarded as a snippet but it is definitely there.

As for the general debate, I think that full blown snippets are the very essence of U2 live. I also love the shoutouts and lyrical references and would hate to see these disappear. Long live the snippet and the Bono crazy shoutout!!!     8)

Nice one, will have a listen to it. Nice of Bono to give a mention to the most famous band from Sheffield, not the tragic Arctic Monkeys but the camp mullet rockers Def Leppard.
