Title: Who was your favorite band before U2 was your favorite band?
Post by: dwaltman on May 16, 2018, 08:36:38 PM
I guess answers will depend on how old you are and which U2 record pulled you in.  For me, we are talking, 1982 and WAR.  So around that time I was into The Police.  I had seen the Ghost in the Machine tour a couple of times.

Exactly the same. The Police.

The Police. Even though they have not released anything new since 1983, they are still my second favorite band behind U2.

Lol. U2 was my first favorite band. I was a casual fan until I saw a Zoo TV show. That was eye (and ear) opening to say the least. :)

Bros......!
(for all of a couple of months) in 1988.
Then I saw the light.  (Don't let it go out).

Yeah, out of all the pop bands I used to have as favourites, A-ha are the only non-embarrassing one.  They can still play live.

Probably The Beatles or Pink Floyd or 80s hair metal. I was born in 1976 and I was like 15 when I got into U2.

Between Bono's mullet and Adam's perm they could have been a hair band in the early days.

A lot of people -- a LOT of people -- don't know what a true mullet is/was. Bono's 1984 Unforgettable Fire hairstyle was a classic mullet. It may be the best/worst I have ever seen in my life. And as Yer Man himself said 'Your hair should never look as though it has been ironed; there are people who to this day cannot like us because of that hair style'.

Oasis, and Red Hot Chili Peppers before that.

I still really enjoy those two bands, but I think I got the good out of those two bands and moved on to U2 as being my favorite, and it's been a joy to get into them & discover such an amazing discography like theirs.

Iíve never connected with any other band the way I connect with U2. But before them my favorite bands were probably the Police and Heart.

Itís interesting that many mentioned The Police.

At the last concert of the Conspiracy of Hope tour, The Police famously passed the torch to U2 during the last song.

U2 has never been my favorite band, but they were pretty close in the late 80's.

Nowadays, they are probably in the 11-15 range if I had to rank my favorites.

INXS.  I absolutely loved 'Shabooh Shoobah', 'The Swing', and 'Listen Like Thieves'.  Those three albums (in a row) were marvellous.  I was just a little young to see them in concert back in those days, but my oldest sister did.  I saw them a bit later for the 'Kick' album.

Because I haven't mention Bruce Springsteen is because he has never been my favorite before U2.

I have a couple of friends who would list INXS as their favorite band before U2. They were further back for me though. But maybe top 5 at the time. Today, still top 10. We all got into INXS during the first year Kick was released. It was amazing going back and buying all the old albums and hearing all this great music for the first time. Too young to see the Kick tour. Missed them on the X tour in early 1991. It was not until the 1993 that I got to see them. I saw them twice in 1993, once in Philadelphia and once in Chicago.

I hear the done touring, but I would love to see them come back around again. It was great seeing them on the Rock Star INXS TV show back in 2005.

The Beatles.  I used to listen to my parents vinyl albums as a kid.  U2 became my favourite band around about 1997, when I was 20.  They are now my second favourite band of all time after The Stones.

No.

Yes.

What is the issue?  Some of my favorite bands either don't have a fan forum anymore or have a crappy one (message boards seem to be slowly dying off).  The chatter here is interesting enough for me to read, and my reading/posting usually is at its heaviest when a new album is out or a new tour has begun.  Plus, I just love talking and reading about music.

Interesting to see the connections to other bands.  Although The Police were the band I was into directly before I connected with U2, I had other favorites before The Police, but no one has replaced U2 since.

As a kid, I kept a Top 10 bands list in my bedroom that I would change every week.  Weird, I know.  If I were to answer the question, "Who is your favorite band?" at different points in my life, this is probably
what I would have said.

Pre-Teen: 3 Dog Night
Early Teens: Chicago
Mid-Teens: Elton John, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith
Late Teens: The Police
Early 20's: The Police, U2, The Cure, REM (basically the entire "alternative" scene)

Then U2 pulled away from everyone else and have since had lots of 2nd favorites at any given time....
Nirvana
Pearl Jam
Arcade Fire
Kings of Leon
The National
Radiohead
among many, many others!

I suppose many people either don't have the time or more likely the interest in posting on a fan forum for a band they only rank as #12 in their list. Maybe your top 3 or 4 artist/bands at most, but nothing beyond that. The only fan forum's I visit are for U2 and that's because they are #1 on my list.

I can understand that, but everybody is different.  There are really only two music forums I frequent and post at regular anymore, and there are a few more where I am registered and check out here and there (this being one of them).  I just throw them in my bookmarks, and if the mood strikes me when perusing the 'net after a long day at work, I will read a little and maybe even post.  Plus, I like reading forums with a large number of posters, because a lot of traffic results in more posts, more different opinions, and more interesting reading.  Some of my top favorites are obscure artists that are very underground, with a fanbase that wants to talk about nothing but the band and/or the subgenre, and as someone who likes all different kinds of music, I have no interest in chatting with fans who only really like one kind of music.

Before becoming a U2 fan in 1989, the first cassette I ever bought in my life was the Raw and the Cooked by Fine Young Cannibals. So young that I didn't even know how to operate the record player.  So I guess before becoming a U2 fan I was a Fine Young Cannibals fan. Even today I listen to them from time to time.

I've noticed several New Wave(ish) bands that I LOVE mentioned in this thread.

I was born in 1976, so discovered them after the fact, but I have loved bands like Duran Duran, INXS, Psychedelic Furs, The Cure, The Church, The Smiths and Tears For Fears for two decades now. But I got into U2 and REM first.

The Furs might be the most underrated band of the last 40 years. People in America only know Pretty In Pink and Heartbreak Beat, and those are great songs, but there's SO MUCH MORE there.

U2 were really my first favorite band.  Before then, I liked stuff like Huey Lewis, Hall & Oates, and Tears for Fears, and just whatever popped up on the radio that I liked.  My friends were all more into hard rock, pop metal and stuff like that.  But U2 were the first band that really inspired me to follow them more closely, and music in general--reading the liner notes, etc.  Depeche Mode and Peter Gabriel followed soon thereafter.

I grew up on New Wave, due to my sisters' influence. Lots of Duran Duran, New Order, Cure, Depeche Mode, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Echo and the Bunnymen.

Born in 1976. My sister was a hardcore U2 and tried to convert me. I liked their songs and had to be told by her that those songs were U2. I was not in LOVE with them during Joshua Tree and Rattle & Hum, like she was. They were my sister's band. I wasn't anywhere near in love with U2.

My top 5 albums just before I fell in love with U2 were:
Automatic - Jesus & Mary Chain
Kick -INXS
Nothing Shocking - Jane's Addiction
Screamadelica - Primal Scream
Doolittle - Pixies

Then Alternative / Grunge was starting to form, which I was really into. Achtung Baby hit, and this was NOT my sister's band. Nor was it anything like New Wave. It wasn't punk, and it didn't fit the mold of Alternative / Grunge. It stood out from EVERYTHING. I was hooked the moment MTV showed the video for the FLY, without giving out the band name until afterward. My punk friends were burning their older U2 records and cassettes, I got much of the back catalog for free. I was immediately immersed and in love with a band for the first time. I realized I had only had a high liking for previous albums. Achtung Baby was my first real love. ZooTV hit, and that was my first concert (bonus, PIXIES opened)

Since then, no one comes close to comparing, but still LOVE other artists
2: tie between Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Explosions in the Sky
3: tie between Bowie and Prince

U2 has never been my favorite band, but they were pretty close in the late 80's.

Nowadays, they are probably in the 11-15 range if I had to rank my favorites.

Who is in that top 10?

I've noticed several New Wave(ish) bands that I LOVE mentioned in this thread.

I was born in 1976, so discovered them after the fact, but I have loved bands like Duran Duran, INXS, Psychedelic Furs, The Cure, The Church, The Smiths and Tears For Fears for two decades now. But I got into U2 and REM first.

The Furs might be the most underrated band of the last 40 years. People in America only know Pretty In Pink and Heartbreak Beat, and those are great songs, but there's SO MUCH MORE there.

That is a good group of bands.  I preferred The Furs, The Cure, and The Smiths out of that group along with U2 and REM.  Throw in Depeche Mode and Talking Heads for fun.

INXS - Kick

4: New Order, Arcade Fire, White Rabbits
5: Chemical Brothers, Lumineers, Head & the Heart, Muse, Peter Bjorn & John, Black Keys, Kasabian

Lots of crossover in our tastes....BRMC, Pixies, Primal Scream!  A couple on your list, I haven't heard....I'll have to check out Explosions in the Sky, White Rabbits, and Peter Bjorn & John.

I'm not sure I had a Bono-fide "favorite band" before ours truly.  But when I was first  really "getting into" U2 in early high school, there was a bit of heated competition with The Doors.  I was going through both bands back catalogues at the same time.  U2 were still making new music, though.  And Achtung Baby sealed the deal to the point where I understood that THIS would be my favorite band of all times, forevers.

Queen, Duran Duran and Depeche Mode. Still love them. But in the first place they are for me U2 and Queen. No order.

YES!!! noticed that as well. Explosions in the Sky are all instrumental. Any fan of U2 and esp the Edge should love them. Swelling guitar orchestration adept at setting atmosphere and climbs to anthemic epic build

White Rabbits is harder to explain... They are not ska, but you can hear some of the influence. Maybe if you mix Oingo Boingo, Clash, and U2 you might have something close? Sadly, they seemed to have disappeared some time ago, with not a word of breakup or moving on etc

Peter Bjorn & John: The dancier stuff from Arcade Fire with more folkish tendencies?

Who is in that top 10?

Rush
Porcupine Tree
Dream Theater
Pink Floyd
Neal Morse
Devin Townsend
Queen
The Beatles
Yes
Genesis (mainly because of their work prior to 1983)

I am obviously a big fan of progressive rock.

U2 would be in that next tier along with Radiohead, Zeppelin, Blue Oyster Cult and Van Halen.

Blondie and they still are my favourite or at least on a par with U2. I found an old copied cassette in my Dad's stereo cabinet of Parallel Lines in the late 80s and played it to death. A few months later I found out what Blondie (well, Debbie Harry) actually looked like and the rest is history. I discovered U2 about a year later when my cousin taped me The Joshua Tree and these two bands have been the "big two" for me ever since. Parallel Lines and The Joshua Tree are records that I'd count as two of my favourite LPs of all time. I've seen both Blondie and U2 seven or eight times and spent a fortune on records by both. Strangely, when I found the Blondie tape, I also discovered another recorded tape labelled Dead Kennedys This Tape Is Kaput. Not having a clue what it was I played that and thought there was something wrong with the tape. Little did I know that is actually what the Dead Kennedys sound like and they have since become another favourite of mine. Ziggy Stardust, Bruce Springsteen and Punk Rock followed but I'll always go back to Blondie and U2.

I finally saw a fully Concert from Blondie, not that long ago. Garbage opened. It was a great show by both. Her new material was also great live. Could not say the same for Depeche Mode. Unfortunately I didn't jump to get tickets right away and we ended up in seats. Some woman asked me to sit down. I told her she was at a ROCK concert, which did not include the prelude "an evening with..." so she should show some respect and give back some energy and stand up

The last Blondie LP was amazing. The best thing they've done in an age. I saw the accompanying tour and the new sounds fitted in with the classics so well. You can't beat a bit of Blondie.

Yes I enjoyed their last album too and have enjoyed most of their albums since they reformed in the late 90s.

Call me crazy, but when I finally heard all of London Calling a few years ago, I was wishing I had those x-minutes back. That style just isn't my thing.

Originally I only mildly liked a couple of songs. I NEVER really liked that song London Calling all that much (still don't like it that much). The amount of songs I liked grew very slowly. Finally just started to dig a little deeper. Charlie Don't Surf has become an all-time favorite for me. However, so far there are very few LOVES I am finding, and the rest I am merely finding interesting or can respect the musicianship, but they don't grab or speak to me on a deeper level.

It may have been MC Hammer haha. Or Aerosmith for a very short period of time right before I heard Zooropa...

Dire Straits - they are why I tuned into LiveAid, and then the band with "International respect and appeal" came on stage.  Years later, Bono brigns up that is was 30 years ago they played LiveAid and they begin "Bad", and I'm fighting becoming a puddle.

Was that the one on Reelz channel?  I was going to watch it but was a little leery of what they might have to say about him.

I was 14 when I discovered this band, so I can answer the question easily, there were none before U2
